What Is Flag Day & Why Do People Celebrate It?

 

 

 

Flag Day is a holiday celebrated here in the US on June 14th each year. 

 

It is a day to honor the national flag of the United States and reflect on its importance in the nation’s history and identity.

 

The origins of Flag Day can be traced back to June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. 

 

 

 

 

 

However, the holiday itself wasn’t officially recognized until much later. It was first observed in 1877 on the centennial anniversary of the adoption of the flag.

 

In 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th as National Flag Day. 

 

The holiday serves as an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the flag’s symbolism, the ideals it represents, and the sacrifices made by those who have defended it.

 

The thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States. The fifty stars represent the states of the union. 

 

The colors of the flag also have significance: red symbolizes valor and bravery, white signifies purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

 

Overall, Flag Day serves as a reminder of the patriotism associated with the American flag. It allows citizens to honor and appreciate the symbol that represents the nation’s values, freedom, and the sacrifices of those who have fought to protect them.

 

Also, oddly enough, June 14 also happens to be President Trump’s birthday! 

 

He turned 77 this year.
