Black Friday is a Bust

That would be target. Target is dead right now. There is no one here shopping, and I’m kind of shocked, to say the least. I need to stay awake. So we’re going to leave here and go to the mall. But I just wanted to show you guys this right now. Some deals, but nothing worth bragging about right now. Black Friday deals at Target. You just can’t miss it. Oh, my gosh.

This stuff looks amazing. Look at all this. Just nobody here. So one thing that I did get a kick out of was the price of these TV sets were fairly good deals, so thought that was pretty good. But look at this. $199 for a 50 inch TV, 429 for an LG TV. I mean, that’s crazy, guys. It’s absolutely crazy. They’ve got these deals. But look at this place.

This place is dead on Black Friday, guys. So, again, if you want to be alone, go to Target. Now, I’m down the road about four or 5 miles, and I’m at arguably one of the best shopping malls in the entire country, south Coast Plaza. The most disturbing part about this right now is that there is no one here. There’s tons of parking available. Normally on Black Friday, valet is full.

You’ve got the cops directing traffic, and this is completely light. This is right before noon. It should be packed. It should be just unbelievable. I’ve seen Saturdays when this mall has been full and parking has been full. I’m right outside of, you know, I’m on the good side, okay? If anybody you know, Target was interesting because Target was dead. Okay? They had a few good deals on know, one of the employees.

I started asking, hey, is this what you guys thought for Black Friday? And he forgot it was Black Friday, thought it was Saturday, which I thought was interesting. That’s the other thing, is if you guys signed up for our email list with a huge Black Friday special that was on it, check your spam filter and make sure you’re getting that. But guys, this is unbelievable. Guys, there’s no one here, okay? So sign of the times, guys, that things are like this.

So let’s go inside, take a look at it, and see what the crowd’s like. Now, I entered the mall through, you know, there’s two Macy’s stores here. This is the men’s store. And you just don’t have the vibe. I’ve talked to a couple of people already that just said it’s kind of nice that there’s not that many people here because they’re shopping, looking for deals. But the thing that’s crazy about Southwest Plaza right now is they’ve got a lot of stores under construction which you never see in this mall.

So a lot of things getting worked on right now. Yes, there are people here, and one thing that everybody pointed out the last two years I did this was what’s it looked like as far as the shopping bags that everybody’s holding. So I don’t see much right now, but we’re going to walk through the mall and get a feel for it and just wanted to do a quick video for you.

I like this side of the mall. It’s higher end. If I keep walking straight, I’m going to run right inwards. During these tough economic times, you need to make a change with your retirement. You’re going to be told that this is the greatest Black Friday since the dawn of man, and nobody’s got shopping bags. I shouldn’t say that maybe 5% of the people bought something that looks like so far, and that’s what you guys kept gauging it on last year. But Andrew Hollenhesk from Citibank, he steps forward and he says, hey, we need to prepare ourselves for lighter spending, and we need to prepare ourselves for an economic downturn.

Please understand this. They won’t use the recession word. What they’re going to say is that the consumer is shopping smarter. They’re changing their buying patterns. No, they’re not spending money, guys, and they don’t want to go into debt to go do this. So when you see certain stores that are absolutely dead, and I understand Jimmy Choo and Giorgio Armani aren’t for everybody, but they’re dead. No one’s there, okay? And the Gucci store being redone.

Right. You know, but remember, they’re going to shop smarter, okay? You have no money you’re not going to be able to buy anything. And look at this, guys. This is not busy at all, okay? I’m on the main floor, and it’s crazy. Okay, so Cartier got their usual, the security guard out front who’s strapped, and you’ve got people not waiting in line like they normally do. Look, they got the rope up.

Okay, we should go wait in line together. Now, Black Friday has always been the official start of the holiday shopping season, but this year, I’m telling you, around the globe, you’re seeing a lot of places that are upside down. Germany, they just announced their third quarter GDP, and it’s off one 10th of 1%. The economy is contracting. People in Germany are going to spend less money between now and the end of the year as well.

You’re going to see this be a familiar thing with the entire world, where you’re going to see less money spent, but they’re going to put a wild spin on it. Now, Louis Vuitton is insane, okay? And you’ve got $35,000 handbags and stuff like that, but it is light compared to normally what it is. And hey, come in, come on in. Normally they direct traffic, and they have people out here waiting in line for handbags they can’t afford.

But this year, come on in, come on down. Give you an idea. I’m at the center of the mall. You got burberry, it’s people, but it’s not busy. They’re not buying anything right now. Okay, so let me know what you think about this so far. They do this really well every year. It’s heavily decorated. It’s really nice. One thing I always love is the Porsche design store, where they drive a new car in once a month.

To show you the Porsche, I had my daughter convinced that they took the car apart and then reassembled it inside. She bought that for years. But anyways, people are hesitant to shop right now. AP did a great story with the best discounts. Will people still shop? And hey, guys, there’s a lot of people here in this section of the mall, okay? There really you know, when security is walking together, they’re not in certain areas.

No one’s buying anything. Okay? So let me know what you guys think about this. We’ll go on an Escalator ride together, and you can get a glimpse of maybe you’ll see Santa up there. But again, a very nice mall, very high end, but people just don’t have the money. And is it worth putting stuff on a credit card for a gift? No, don’t do that, guys. Write somebody a card.

It’s more thoughtful than buying them anything. All these people waiting down there to see Santa, how lucky are they? Okay, so Busier up here on the second floor. Get the gist of it. We found him, we found Santa. Do you guys want me to ask him? Anything for you. One thing I get a kick out of is, hey, is Black Friday worth it? You’re going to see such a spin on this that there’s no need to go shopping at a place like this.

There’s no need to fight the crowd here’s. The best deals online. The point is that right now, I just ran into somebody that I knew, and we were talking that nobody’s got any bags, nobody’s shopping right now. That’s what you’re seeing right now is that it is off right now. Now you got places like Victoria’s Secret that do their 40% off, and you got tutor, and things are weird here.

This mall is off because you have all this construction going on where you generally don’t have the stores. Now, look at this, guys. I mean, a line for the Lego store is that crazy. Okay, so what do you think? It’s busy again? Yes. There’s people here. Yes. You’re going to say, oh, wow, it’s packed. No one has any shopping bags. It’s just what you guys have talked about for years, talking about how this is off.

Okay, so interesting. I’m going down by where Sears used to be, dindai funds up here and Gentle Monster finally open. But guys, it’s great. It’s busy, but it’s not. And what I mean by that is there’s people here, but they’re not shopping.

So share your thoughts on this. The other thing is the number of empty stores. Now, the Lego store having a line that’s kind of whackadoo. I don’t know what they’re giving away at the Lego Store, but give you guys an idea where I’m at right now. So the restaurants are busy, but I like, the La. Times has an article that says that the average consumer has been squeezed by inflation.

Thanks for admitting that, finally. But are they shopping? Are they spending money out here? And again, I need to check out the Lego site where people are waiting in line for the Lego store. Doesn’t that seem insane to you? What could they possibly be giving people that you need to wait in line for this. Now you can sit there and be blown away by the number of people who’s buying what, who is shopping and buying anything substantial, who’s got discounts that are huge? Who name it.

Okay. The Lego store. Man The Lego store. Legos, guys. Okay. Black Friday at the Lego store. Guys. Crazy. Go put that on your credit cards, guys. Don’t buy it all. Okay? Am I missing something, guys? Do you think that this is stellar? I’ve ran into two people now that I know, and they’re like, wow, this is a lot busier than I thought. Yeah, but look, no one’s buying anything.

People just walking through the mall to check this place know, I’m downstairs on the other side of the santa exhibit. Squeeze through, and maybe we’ll get a glimpse of the man again.
