The US doesn’t keep track of this, so the only way we can officially keep track is through people who run. What I found, hold on, let me let me had this conversation with y’all real quick because as an international traveler and I’m gonna go into ABC News. As an international traveler, I will tell you that I always like the research, what people are doing, how people are doing, and I like to confirm the things that people tell me when I meet them in person, right? So I was in Brazil and I met another person that was in Brazil and he was a black guy and it was with a, you know, he was with his girl or whatever it is.
I didn’t ask who she was and I said, oh, hey, how y’all doing or whatever? And they said, you know, we was talking because we was on our way up to go and see the Christ Redeemer statue and so you sit in this cart, this like this train slash car or whatever and it’s three seats on both sides and so they face each other and so we talking whatever and I said, um, you know, where y’all from or whatever and they said that they was from California and I asked them, I said, would y’all ever move here? Because I was curious about why people are so interested in moving to other countries.
I didn’t know if they doing it because of the cost or what and he said, no, I don’t think so. I’m, you know, it’s my first time here or whatever. So I did some research and of course I talked to baby girl. Baby girl is my AI assistant and I talked to baby girl and I did some research on what it would take to move to Rio in Brazil, right? And what I found was a, you already got to have money. You already have to have money. If you move into these other countries, it was something like you got to have at least 18,000 in your bank account and or be making at least 2000 or $3,000 a month.
So you because you can’t move to another country and then be flying back and forth in order to go to the office. So whatever your income is, it has to be coming in. I don’t know if you retire from the military or any of that type of stuff, but you already got to have resources before you come into the country. The United States is the only place where you can go and you can become a legal citizen or you could get a visa to be able to stay there long term without actually having no resources.
You could just get on government assistance and start a Chinese food restaurant, China, and you could just exist. But all the rest of these other countries, you have to bring resources to go there. You have to show up already made already having money already have an income and be generating revenue. So you have when you apply, right? Because I don’t know if you have a lot of people, some is most people haven’t traveled in internationally. When you go and you go through customs, when you get into these other countries, they ask you, how long are you going to be here? Whatever.
And they look at your, not your passport, but they look at your, whatever the printed, your printed plane ticket, right? Your return and plane ticket. And a lot of times you have to show it or scan it or you just give them your passport and they ask you, how long you been, how long you plan on being here? Are you here for business? Are you here for vacation? You say, I’m vacation. I’m gonna be here for about a week. And they say, okay, cool, whatever. When you decide that you want to stay in a country long term, it’s a whole process.
You got to make sure that you paying taxes there. Otherwise you can get double taxed from what you generate in the United States and then get taxed over there. So you have to, you know, that the tax system may be progressive with the highest tax rate and the 20 and 30% and stuff like that. So it’s a whole process to moving to a, you can’t just jump on a plane, go to another country and say, you know what? I’m gonna stay here. It’s a process for that. And you got to have money.
So how do people? Prices, intense demands at work and even school shootings have many Americans believing that life in another country would be better. But having a second or even first home in the south of France, South America or just north of the border in Canada is not always easy to pull off depending on the country. Having an ancestor or of course, a large amount of cash on hand, however, can help. Here now is our Maggie ruling reporting from Italy. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. In summer, Florence feels like a living postcard sunlight on terracotta rooftops, church bells in the distance and life unfolding slowly under the Tuscan sun.
A growing number of Americans are and when y’all go to these other countries, a lot of times y’all go to the touristy areas and y’all say, oh my God, this is so awesome. I will move here. When you live there, you’re not in the touristy areas. Just like the chat said, if you in the hood here, you’re gonna be in the hood there. You’re not gonna be living no extravagant life there. And you was living like a pauper here. That’s not how it works. Choosing to make scenes like this permanent with applications to live abroad at an all time high.
We meet up with Robin Kim murder truck and family who moved here. Look, this is a rich man’s game. Either you’re a military expat, you know, your job sent you over there to be a teacher. Either you go and get a position there and you teach in English. But if you just go in there because you know what? I just want to go and experience a different place one extended period of time. You gotta have some money. This is a rich look at them. They’re on the rooftop. They’re not chilling in the favelas and being in a hood with you smoking cigarettes outside, trying to figure it out.
These are the people that got money. You ain’t them. You’re not them. That’s not you. You’re not them. He got on a whole suit. He got on a tan suit, a light tan suit with a handkerchief and he got his collars a straight up. He don’t even got drunk collars. You know how you can tell when a nigga got money? Tell you how you can tell when you got money. When their collars are not drunk, meaning that it’s not flapped out like you a 70s singer, but they’re not button up collars either.
That means that it’s got a nice, sturdy, strong, quality shirt. The collar don’t have to be a button up, but at the same time, it stays in place and you just enjoying life. Those are the type of dudes that comb their hair like this. Look like you look like a bond character. Playing that Italian music five years ago, you got a bodyguard. You got a bodyguard. That’s a bodyguard. That’s not a relative. That’s a bodyguard that’s next to him. Moved here nearly five years ago. Their terrace view of the historic Florence skyline so close to the Duomo feels very different from their old house in Los Angeles.
I’m sorry. Can we just talk about your life here for a second? Because I’m pinching myself. Is it actually where you guys maybe that’s her husband? I don’t know. Breakfast. Yeah, this is it. In 2025, the US saw more people move out of the country than since the Great Depression. In 2024, requests for a foreign passport jumped by 48%. America for era are all finding new homes over. You can have that whole lineup of people because we all know that Ellen degenerate. She moved because her reputation had turned in the trash here inside the United States of America.
You got listen that whole roster. That’s not inspiration. None of these people. That’s on that song right here is inspiration for me wanting to move outside of the country. All of them is running deeps. And mostly what I like to do is bring my passport headlines for it. But for most Americans getting a second passport is far less glamorous. There are several ways to move abroad depending on what route you take. The process can involve getting to turn this music off of time, money and patience. Robin Kim are on an elective residency visa, which allows them to live in Italy long term without working, provided they have stable, passive income from sources outside Italy, like I tried to tell you all that they allow for you to come over there and spend your american dollars over in Italy feed into the economy and you already got to have income coming in from abroad and it has to be stable.
You’re not just going over there saying, you know what? Let me figure out what the next opportunity is. I need to get a job. No, you already got to be popping. You already got to be popping in order to get elective residency visa to go and stay and spend and pay taxes and property taxes over into the economy, insurance or investments. We got no we got no standards here. But the golden visa also allows a path to residency. It requires a significant financial investment, which can include real estate or government backed funds.
But guess what? You know what else is so funny about this? They told Trump that he was crazy because he got the golden visa here in the United States of America, but they got it over in other countries already. They’re already charging people. They got mad when when Trump said, yeah, you can buy the gold visa and that automatically grants you a pathway to citizenship and the United States of America. Everybody was, oh God, I can’t believe he’s charging people to come over here. They’re doing it everywhere already. Trump did it.
It was bad, but no, it’s cool to go over there. You got to make a whole real estate investment or business investment and fund purchases over into the country, a significant financial investment to even be qualified to get a gold visa. Trump said, hey, man, if y’all want to come over here and y’all just want to do what y’all want to do, then you’re going to have to pay the visa price or you’re going to have to get in line like everybody else. Oh God, I can’t believe Trump did it again.
For the countries that accept these visas, the price can range anywhere from $13,000 in Canada to nearly $10 million in Singapore. Can you do $10 million in Singapore? I can’t wait to get to Singapore. I’m going to Singapore and I’m going to go to all of the places that I’ve seen them on Crazy Rich Asians go to. I can’t wait to y’all keep on trying to go to Dubai. I want to go to Dubai. Why? Because all of the Instagram baddies went there and got them a rich prince to take a dump on them.
I want to go to Singapore. I want to go to Singapore. That’s where I want to go. I want to go where the Crazy Rich Asians in the movies went. My pleasure. Michaela Kapeke is the Italian lawyer who Robin Kim say was instrumental in making their dream possible. Could you just describe to me what was your life like in America? It was work, work, work. And it was it was getting up early. And there was a there was an unrest that was in me that was brewing. And so I found myself with the house and the cars and the degree.
And then going, but I’m not happy. Before moving to Italy, Rob was a chiropractor moving with his wife, Kim, and their five year old daughter from New York to Los Angeles during the pandemic. But right before the cross country move, Rob promised Kim their family could spend a summer in Italy. The trip turned out to be life changing. So when we went back, Rob dropped right back into that rat race. And I said, you know what? I like you better in Italy. And you’re just a different person there at that time. We didn’t plan on living here.
We planned on living in the States. I mean, I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer here, but, you know, I’ve got a kindergartner that is preparing for a shooter. I wanted to be in a place where I felt that I didn’t have to worry about sending my child, sending my daughter to school to go through a metal detector. I didn’t want to do that. And that’s what led us to call Michaela to say, get us back here as fast as possible. Well, Andy says Rob and Kim are waiting to hopefully get a passport.
But that path to citizenship can be complicated for the average American resident by investment is not an option. And there are cheaper alternatives. Americans could be eligible for dual citizenship by ancestry. But countries like Spain, Germany, Ireland and Italy having the strongest claims. But, you know, the work, the interesting part about it is that they had to hire a lawyer to go through the process to try to figure out how they can get dual citizenship or get dual passports so that they can go over there and stay longer. But recently, countries like Italy have started tightening restrictions on ancestral claims.
And now passport hopefuls must prove that a grandparent or parent has citizenship. We had to go back a bit further to sort of the great grandparent level. For Emily Grossi and her family who live just outside D.C. in Maryland, what started as a fun side project to reconnect with their Italian heritage during the pandemic turned into a very real plan to move abroad. It sounds like you’ve always had this desire to live abroad and to experience life abroad. But why the extra urgency now? Guns have come online in America in such a hideous way.
And, you know, the number of lockdowns my kids have endured, the number of active shooter drills and actually of shooters near and in their schools. I mean, it’s just that is appalling. It seems like in all of these situations, you also see the woman. The women are the ones that’s making the decisions. They go on vacations or they go to trace their ancestry. And most of the time they live in California and New York. And then the women are the ones that’s making the decisions on behalf of the family as far as where they’re going to live at.
To me, I’m tired of having to worry about, you know, are my kids going to come home from school? And I just think there’s a different way of maybe doing things that would feel more in line with my own values. And do you think you’ll find that abroad? I mean, do you think the grass is really greener? You know, certainly I am an idealistic person, but I’m also very rational and pragmatic. So I do think things like Nationalized Health Services, you know, different tax structures, different community values. I think it’s worth a try.
I know many people abroad and you give something up. There’s always a cost, but I think the rewards could be tremendous. Michaeli has worked on a lot of these cases and tells us he’s noticed a large increase of American clients looking to come to Italy. Recently, have you had more Americans coming to you for help to move here? Yes, this is still a country where you can find a balance between being successful business-wise, having a good relationship with friends. This balance has allowed Rob to go from being a chiropractor to using social media to encourage other Americans to experience Italy’s La Dolce Vita or the Sweet Life.
But Rob and Kim say they’ve never been happier. There are some parts of America they miss. So I’m curious, living abroad, is there anything you now actually appreciate more about America being a little removed? Here’s what I appreciate. In America, we believe culturally that and why is she always the one talking? Anything is possible. And often in Italy, when you ask for something to be done, the first thing is impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible. When an American says no problem, it’s no problem. When an Italian says no problem, it’s a problem, it’s a problem.
Yeah, I’m straight. I’m going to still be an American. I wonder how he still makes money, though. That’s what I’m trying to figure out. How is he making money? If he was a chiropractor back in the States, how does he make money there? We’re missing a part of the story.
