A ransomware campaign is targeting thousands of organizations worldwide, exploiting a two-year-old VMware vulnerability.

The campaign is affecting VMware ESXi servers that have been left unpatched against a remotely exploitable bug from 2021.

It is being dubbed as “ESXiArgs” and is causing significant damage due to the number of unpatched machines.

Over 3,200 VMware servers worldwide have been compromised so far, with France being the most affected country.

Italy’s ANSA news agency, citing the ACN (Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency), reported that servers had been compromised in other European countries such as France and Finland as well as the United States and Canada.

The unknown attackers are using a “triple-extortion” technique and are demanding 2.06 bitcoin in ransom payments. VMware has acknowledged the attack and advised organizations to apply patches to prevent further damage.
