Summary

➡ Today, we’re looking at the NV300 Max, a high-resolution thermal imager for vehicles. It’s larger and more advanced than its predecessor, the NV300, with a 6.4-inch OLED screen and dual-spectrum thermal imaging. It’s easy to install and can withstand various weather conditions. However, its wide screen mode loses some information, and it may not work as well in the daytime due to thermal and solar radiation.

Transcript

Today on the channel, we are checking out a bigger, better, brighter, and higher resolution thermal imager for your vehicle. Apparently it’s plug and play, easy to use, we’re gonna find out. So I recently reviewed the ThermoMaster NV300, which is the cheaper, smaller version of this. This is the NV300 Max. This actually was the one I thought I was buying originally, but I accidentally purchased the other one. So it’s got a pretty cool box that you open up, just like that. And on the outside, it gives us our core specifications. So they provide you with a 6.4-inch OLED screen that has a resolution of 2340 by 1080.

It has 3-vision dual-spectrum thermal imaging. It has 300-meter life detection. We’ll talk about what they mean by that in a moment. It has 0.1 seconds in terms of detection, auto record collision, and a 3-in-1 infrared dash cam OBD. So I can tell right from the jump that compared to the NV300, this one is a lot bigger. I originally thought that it had a slightly better sensor than the other one, but maybe it doesn’t. I guess we’re gonna find out in terms of how well it functions. But yeah, it’s got a lot more weight to it. It is magnetized, so you can actually just put it right on top of your car.

But if you’re worried about it flying off due to wind, there is adhesive there to give you that extra bit of support. I actually drove around 1,200 kilometers with it on my vehicle and tested it in all kinds of different types of weather. Windy, sleet, snow, rain even. And it actually stuck on there. I haven’t had any issues so far. However, the way my truck is configured, I do have a roof rack, which kind of adds a little bit of a back end support and wind break. That might have prevented it from going flying off the car.

So, you know, if you’re planning on mounting this permanently, you may want to use the adhesive. To the best of my knowledge, the adhesive will not damage your vehicle if you take it off properly. So this is the NV300. This is the NV300 Max. The problem with this is it kind of defeats the purpose if you’re squinting to look at the screen for your thermal imager while you’re trying to drive at the same time. It just creates a distracting driving hazard as opposed to something that’s actually augmenting your driving experience, which is what I hope this is going to do.

This is ample screen for me to quickly at a glance, see if there’s a potential hazard on the road. Okay, so we got our usual cord protectors that kind of streamline it a bit. So it doesn’t look like some trailer park job, got our adhesive. We have our USB cord as well as our other attachments, alcohol wipes. We have a screwdriver to open it up, see what’s on the inside. These things are actually remarkably water resilient. It has the highest ingress protection rating that you can get without being like fully submersible. But rain is not going to be a factor with this thing.

Now you could probably hardwire this to your fuse box, but they don’t provide you with those cords. They only give you the DC plug. Cool thing about that though is it does have your USB, what looks like 3.0 outlets attached. Some assembly required, but not much. So we’re going to go test it out and see how it works. The first mistake that probably 50% of people make when they get into prepping is they run out and they find the cheapest, biggest bucket of so-called emergency food that money can buy. The problem is it usually tastes awful.

And I know what you’re thinking, mate, in a disaster situation, I’m going to rise to the occasion. My palate is formidable. No, it’s not. You’re not built like that. You’re a first-worlder just like me. There’s a much better solution that your family is going to love you for. Let’s check it out. Would you like some chocolate cake that will last 25 years? How about some vegetables or some shredded beef or hundreds of other varieties? Go through the link in the description below and get 15% off the number one freeze-dried food company in America. The only one that I 100% resolutely endorse wholesale freeze-dried foods.

Use the coupon code in the description for 15% off. So ideally the device would be right here. So I didn’t really have to avert my gaze too much to see it. Otherwise, it kind of defeats the purpose if you have to look over there for it. So now as I turn, I have a sneaking suspicion it is going to revert to just the standard camera mode. It seems to know when you’re turning like that. It still identifies all the cars, but then it goes right back to thermal mode. It appears to be like a less sophisticated version of Tesla vision.

So it can identify cars and people. So during the daytime, the contrast isn’t as good. Because there’s all kinds of thermal radiation and solar radiation that is obfuscating the image. It’s going to work way better at night when you have a wider temperature gradient. Right now, the road is nearly the same temperature as the car. So you don’t see that distinction as much. You’re typically going to be using something like this at night. I mean, the purpose of something like this is for night vision. But the benefit of thermal imagers is that they also have a dual purpose during the daytime as well.

In that there’s things that you might not be able to see because of camouflage. Night vision can be fooled by camouflage. Thermal imagers cannot. So far, I must say I’m liking the big wide screen. But the problem is when you go widescreen mode, all it’s doing is punching in. So you can see the aspect ratio here. So it’s almost a square. And because this is a long panoramic sort of rectangle, when you expand the view, you’re just punching in. So you lose a bunch of information. So it’d be much better if this was a large square screen.

That way, you could get all of that information. You can actually plug this into your car and it will show you all of your like speedometer and all your gauges here. You know, that’s kind of unnecessary information when you have all that on your heads up display. So here we have visible light mode. Here we have fusion mode. So what this is doing is it’s blending the thermal and the actual camera image to get a little bit more detail. And then if we go back to thermal mode, we’re just getting strictly thermal. So it’s not using the cameras at all.

And then, of course, we have dual spectrum mode. So that just shows you the extent of the punch in on thermal. So this is auto mode. So auto mode is that mode that switches between the thermal and the light mode whenever it’s necessary. I’m not sure what the reasoning is behind it, but we definitely know that when you’re turning corners, that happens. It’s a pretty clean job on the outside. The cord’s right along the window. Obviously, you’re going to be able to tell. You can’t hide it entirely. So we can see the whole street kind of out to that distance.

So that means that we, you know, we get a pretty wide angle field of view. I’d say it’s sufficient for detecting deer or wildlife coming onto the street. One of the main uses for something like this outside of a vehicle could be actually home security. And so you could have the monitor inside your home and you could have this camera that’s on top of the car pointed maybe towards like your front gate or something. So you could see what’s going on at night much further than night vision will allow. Most night vision doesn’t go that far.

But this allows you to see, you know, for several hundred meters, at least detect whether there’s movement that will become very useful if you live on acreage or if somebody, you know, is potentially hiding. The hell is that on that guy’s truck? A bunch of shit. Oh, yeah, it’s a cow. It’s like a manure. And of course, Dominic put rainbow mode on my car. So now you can see the rainbow road. Always rainbows. I don’t want rainbows. No, don’t do it. Put your goddamn nose back where it came from. So they give you this so you can mount it.

Ideally, it’d be kind of right there. It’s not too intrusive in your field of view. Like I can still see over it. You want it in a place where you’re going to be able to see it at a glance, right? The magnet’s not that strong. Like it’s kind of like, you know, it’s kind of weird like that. There’s another passer by here going to get some booze at Monday afternoon. So yeah, like this thing is, you know what I mean? I’d almost rather have a tripod mount like this, something that could clamp it in, then this thing that’s kind of all over the place.

So there it makes sense. Depending on your height, it might impede your view a little bit. So if I sit up straight, I can almost see like it’s just barely impeding my lower field of view here. But not by much. Oh, yeah, look at this guy. This is exactly who you would expect to see at a liquor store on Monday afternoon. Look at this chick here. What is she? She’s on cloud nine. What the hell is going on? She’s doing slalom. This guy is now impeding our field of view. So with this mixed mode, it should show you humans in red.

So if a person is not human and they’re actually an alien, like in that movie, They Live, they’re not going to come out on this screen. They’re just going to blend in like everything else. So let’s go see if we can find an actual human. Oh, so it’s found a few humans there. These people are certified humans. Congrats. This mode is not the most responsive. By the time it detects that it’s a living thing, it’s kind of too late. You already hit them. So I can mess with this. This makes sense to me. I might violate some distracted driving law.

I don’t know. My hand’s not on it. I’m not sure if you’re allowed to have something in your direct field of view. If you aren’t, then don’t do this. So we can record video if we want. We can take pictures. So it’s saying that we can highlight close distance pedestrians. That just means when you see a pedestrian or any life form, it will illuminate that person. So you distinctly know it’s not just any old heat source. It’s actually a living organism. Image enhancement, of course, is on. There’s no reason not to have that on. I don’t think.

So we have Bluetooth. We have our open Wi-Fi. If you have a tablet that you want to connect to here, so you want an even bigger view of what’s going on, you can do that. This has the human detection in it. So you can see that that square around it. So there is an audible cue in addition to having to look at the video itself. Yes, we know the communist is a hazard. I get it. You don’t have to keep reminding me. That’s very useful because you’re not always going to be looking at this thing.

You’re going to be looking at the road, right? So you really almost want the AI to do the work for you and notify you if there’s a hazard, right? And so, yeah, that’s pretty cool. So communist camera guy, if you wouldn’t mind going back a little further, just straight out that way. How far do you have to be away from a communist before they cease to be a hazard? Some people say you could never be too far. You’re still a hazard. You’re not far enough yet. You can’t submerge yourself in the wall.

Okay, the communist refuses to embed. She’s still like, she’s very adamant that you’re a hazard still. I’m not a hazard. I’m a capitalist. How can I be a hazard? Now it claims it’s a 512 by 384 thermal imager, which I don’t think is true because that’s the highest of high-end thermal imagers. It is a very good quality, but I think the actual thermal sensor is smaller. And what it does is it interpolates and it enhances the images using AI. 512 by 384 super resolution. So don’t say hazard again. If you say hazard again, I’m going to go John Connor on your ass.

This one has a thermal imager plus the dash cam. This one doesn’t have a dash cam. I’m going to kill you. Okay, we’re going to take off pedestrian alarm. We’re going to take off that. We’re going to take off all of this. Now she should shut up. It’s not a very responsive touch screen. If I’m being honest, it’s like those old Android tablets just sucked. I don’t even know what I’m pressing here. Like this is the most unresponsive piece of screen in history. Like I’m just swiping around hoping that something happens here. Okay. Either way, the only reason why I wanted this one is because it has a bigger screen.

I don’t really care so much about the dash cam. I already have a dash cam. It would be cool if this was just all integrated in all cars because it’s a cool feature to have. Now you could see that the thermal imager is slightly angled upwards because most roofs of cars slope this way. So when you actually mount it on your vehicle, it’s pointing straight ahead, but not all vehicles are going to have that. It’d be nice if there was a articulating mounting plate so you could put this on different types of vehicles because, of course, not every vehicle is going to have the same type of roof.

It’s actually a very high-quality thermal imager. For the $799 USD, I mean, you can’t go wrong for something like this, guys.
