This tiny little low-cost device that you can get off of Amazon is theoretically capable of stopping a moving vehicle. Is this the ultimate area denial system for the Mad Max Apocalypse? Today on the channel we’re going to find out. Let’s get to it. All right, so today we’re going to do a little bit of a science experiment. These are called Caltrops. Imagine it’s the apocalypse, right? Some marauders are pursuing you in a Mad Max-like convoy. What are you going to do? How are you going to stop them? Well, you might want to use some of these.
Caltrops are one of the oldest tools for area denial used in warfare. Simple yet effective, they were scattered on battlefields to cripple cavalry horses or slow-marching soldiers and deny access to narrow passes. The design is ingenious. No matter how they land, a sharp spike always points upwards. Over the centuries they’ve been used in countless forms. Iron stars, spike balls and even improvised from nails. Even bigger forms like the Czech Hedgehog are used to deny military vehicles access to an area. In modern times Caltrops shifted from hindering cavalry to disabling vehicles, piercing rubber tires and creating instant roadblocks.
Whether against armored columns, foot patrols or supply convoys, their role has always been the same. Stop movement, sow chaos and buy a little bit more time. It’s very important to remember that this force multiplier can be used against you. If you ever find yourself in the unfortunate predicament, of navigating a post-collapse world in your road warrior mobile, just know that scavengers will likely set these and other kinds of traps to disable your vehicle. Now we’re going to see if they actually work today. The communist cameraman has volunteered his vehicle in order to be a test dummy for this product to see if it works.
Now we have two different kinds that you can get off of Amazon. I don’t think these are going to work for tires with thick tread, but these ones should be able to work for the communist hippy mobile. And if that don’t work, then we’ve actually gone a little bit further and we’re using these. These are slightly different. This we’re going to call the L board. Now this on the other hand, what the hell is that? Is that bird s***? Nasty. That’s a great way to stop somebody in their tracks. Take two. Now we have this as a fail save because I want to make sure I destroy his vehicle.
I’m going to buy him a new set of tires, guys. Don’t worry. That’s why he signed on for this experiment. You can also use these on fences, on the top of fences or window sills, things like that. I know in some countries, what they’ll do is they’ll actually use mortar and broken glass on the window sills or on top of the fences so that you try to trespass on their property. You’re going to get scraped up pretty good. Now it’s never failed that the tiniest little nail has punctured my tire. So if this doesn’t work, I’m going to be really pissed.
I have a suspicion that maybe this metal is going to buckle under the weight of the vehicle, but you can see there, these are two triangles effectively attached to one another. So there’s going to be that extra bit of support there. So we should get puncture. These are legal to buy, but they’re probably illegal to use, so don’t use them unless it’s a life or death, Mad Max situation, and there’s no more rule of law. Maybe in that case, the government will let you make an exception. Okay, advance. All right. They’re stuck to your tire.
I don’t know what’s happening. As you can see, they’re all stuck inside his tire, but we don’t know if the tire is leaking yet. I didn’t hear any popping sound, but I presume that once we pull these out, oh yeah, that tire screwed. So they definitely work beyond a shadow of a doubt. They work. The problem is is that they only make a slight puncture and while they’re sticking in there, you probably could run that tire for quite a while. So if you were being pursued like in a high speed chase, chances are their tires would not go flat right away.
Right now, he’s losing PSI. There was about seven or eight punctures on that one tire. If there was only one or two punctures, I have a feeling that it’s very likely that this tire is going to take a long time to bleed out. So we’re going to try something a little bit more aggressive. I think that we’re going to try the help work. The communist cameraman doesn’t want me to do it, but little does he know this is an authoritarian dictatorship and I guess I make the rules. So go for it.
Yeah, you’re dead. But you did take a look at the damage here. Okay, so with the board mounted caltrops, we were able to get penetration on the tire. It is slowly leaking out. I think about four or five different points of penetration, but as you can see, depending on the way these things are positioned, that’s going to determine how effective they are. We want these running in the direction of travel of the vehicle, so not sideways because you can see that a lot of these are actually bent over. They were effective in that they work, but if this was a heavier vehicle and if it was going faster, I have a suspicion it might not work as well.
So what we’re going to get the communist cameraman to do next, we’re going to see if he can run over one that’s running in the direction of travel. If he approaches it this way, this shape is probably going to be at its strongest and most rigid. So we’re going to try it again. We’re going to see how long I don’t know how much longer these tires are going to give us. So we got to get this test done. So let’s do it. All right, let’s rock. Yeah. Ouch. Yeah, you definitely went over that one.
So tell me, how did you like this experiment? Really? That doesn’t sound like it went too well for you, did it? Well, I want to thank you for coming out today. It’s been great of you to volunteer your time. So I was a little concerned that it might not work at all. Fortunately, for all you vandals out there, it works. If you were to use something like this, basically the vehicle is likely going to be stopped where the trap is set. Whereas with the other caltrops, if you were being pursued and you decided to toss them out the window, it might potentially slow the vehicle down.
But these Amazon ones, I don’t know if I’d say they’re very reliable. They tend to break fairly easily, as you can see here. They’re not really conducive to evading an immediate threat, but they will inevitably disable your pursuers vehicle. So these definitely work. We did notice that the direction of travel certainly matters. So this is the one that actually punctured the wheel, and you could see it’s not damaged at all. Whereas this one right here, I’m not sure what happened, but it actually bent. If you had a slightly bigger caltrops that could make a bigger gash and something that ideally would fall out of the tire, because it’s really in the hanging on that is going to plug the hole.
So this one, as you can see, it’s already pretty much flat. Now let’s just walk around here. Okay, so this one was punctured probably about 10 minutes prior to the other one, and it is still airing out. It’s still got a little bit of pressure in it, but you can see these things are all stuck in it. So we got to pull these out for cheap Amazon $20 special. It worked quite well. But honestly, this same concept would work with a wooden board and nails that was slightly buried with some gravel or some leaves.
Maybe if you had some kind of grease on there, that might not only increase the penetration, but increase the expulsion. So the lubrication will increase the penetration, it’s going to allow it to slide right in without you’re not even going to feel a thing. Pulling it out though is going to be just as easy, right? So and I’ve had problems with that in the past. Question is, will it Mario Kart? That’s the question, right? So if you’re being, you know, pursued, and you say through some of these out the window, would it work in its current form? Chances are you’re going to be being pursued by a vehicle with aggressive tire tread.
It’s not going to incapacitate the vehicle right away. Not only are these good for vehicles, they’re also good for two legged predators. One of my favorite movies as a kid was Home Alone. And there’s two instances in that movie where Marv, one time he steps on a rusty nail, and the other time he steps on a bunch of broken Christmas ornaments. So if you want to give somebody a bad day, just spread a bunch of these around and that will likely burst their bubble. I don’t know what am I saying here? Once again, I must advise, the test that we demonstrated here today was purely for scientific purposes only.
If you do this, there’s a good chance you’ll go to jail. So don’t do this. Yeah, go pick some up. I will post a link in the description below. Thanks for watching.
