I’m sure everybody’s seen the popular portrayal of King Louis XVI. He’s always portrayed as someone who was rather weak, kind of dull, not a strong character, uncaring and basically kind of dim.

The truth, of course, is completely different. He was not a weak man, but he was certainly not a tyrant. If he had been a tyrant, he probably wouldn’t have gotten the situation he found himself in later. The french revolution never would have happened under someone like King Louis XIV. But Louis had the important qualities necessary for a king. He was a very moral man and he cared for his people.

He had a lot of genuine care and compassion for his people. That’s not what most histories say, but they’re written by the revolutionaries. The only reason King Louis XVI was not a successful monarch was not because of any fault of his own, but because you can’t really be a successful monarch if you have people who are traitors, constantly working to undermine everything you do, who don’t want you to succeed, who do not want your country to succeed, because they want to destroy the system, they wanted to destroy the monarchy.

He improved the courts, the legal system, made the legal system in France much more fair than it had been. He improved conditions in the prisons greatly over what they had been. And a lot of people know about the Bastille, and they think about the storming of the Bastille at the start of the French Revolution. Politically incorrect. Truth is, the Bastille was not that bad a place. It might have looked really imposing and formidable, but it really was not bad on the inside.

And there was practically no prisoners there when they stormed the place. But King Louis XV abolished torture, said, we’re not going to have any more of that. And he ended poor slavery. Friends, when they had a public project to do, usually they would just have forced labor, and everyone was liable for a service of forced labor. He got rid of that to compensate for that. To do, to pay for the public works, that would have to be done to pay people.

Instead of having forced labor, he had to have land taxes. And, of course, only the wealthy people in France at that time, the aristocrats, were about the only people who owned property. They didn’t like that. But he enacted a land tax on all property owners, and he paid property taxes himself. He said he wanted to set a good example, so he paid all the property taxes that everyone else was having to pay for all the land that was owned by the crown of France.

Most people don’t know that. Most people don’t know he provided free medical care to the poor. Most people don’t know that. He reestablished the parliaments in France, the local governments, where people had a greater say in these things, because King Louis saw that under his great grandfather, great great grandfather, under King Louis XIV, power had been vastly centralized. Starting Louis XI and Louis XIV, power had been greatly centralized in France.

And that worked out okay when you had someone like King Louis XIV in charge, but under King Louis XV wasn’t so good. And so King Louis XVI was trying to take things back from that extreme, to go back and decentralize power more. And he was doing that. He was in the process of doing that. When the French Revolution broke out, he also granted civil rights to Protestants for the first time since the pedict of Nant was revoked.

He was not a tyrant. He was not an autocratic man, and he was not an uncaring man. And what really the kind of the last straw that broke out before the French Revolution, when things started to get out of hand, was because of a tax increase, a tax increase that was needed to pay the cost of the war in America with Great Britain, because the kingdom of France came to the aid of the american colonials fighting against the british crown in the american war for independence.

King Louis XV agreed because he was trying to restore, to recoup the losses from the reign of his grandfather and restore France’s prestige in the world. And so he’s going to help the Americans. But then the Americans went and made a separate peace with Britain, so they got their independence. France ended up losing the war. He had to pay for that somehow. And so in order to pay for that, he decided to raise taxes.

But he was only raising taxes on the wealthy people. On the rich. He didn’t actually raise taxes on the poor. But not many people knew that because of the revolutionaries, because of the people who were just traitors and anti monarchy and wanted to destroy the system. They went out and just told half the truth and spread it around all the papers. All they said was the king was raising taxes.

And people got very upset about that. Very outraged. Well, the king was raising taxes, but he wasn’t raising taxes for the vast majority of the people in France, only on the wealthy. But they didn’t tell him that. And that was what prompted the call for the king to recall the estates general, which he finally did. But even that wasn’t the great success most people think it was. And he was very reluctant to do that.

And some people have used that to say, well, King Louis XVI wasn’t really wanting to give people a voice. That’s why he didn’t want to recall the estates general, because things would get out of hand, which they did. But it’s not true that he feared what the people had to say. The problem was that the people, most of the people who were there to represent the third estate, the common people of France, were not the common people themselves, but were lawyers, lawyers who were infected with all of the treasonous ideas and kind of idealistic, left wing, revolutionary thought.

And they did not have the best interests of the people at heart. And they didn’t agree with what the people wanted anyway. They wanted to tear down the kingdom of France. They wanted to tear down the traditional catholic monarchy. The regular people of France were not in favor of that. And that was why King Louis XVI was very reluctant to recall the estate general. And we can see by the way things turned out that he was completely correct to be hesitant about that.

So histories of Ireland have generally been written by Englishmen, and they refer to this genocide, this holocaust, as a famine. The so called potato famine of the 18, the late 1840s went on for about four years. And during that time, the irish population went from eight or 9 million down to 4 million. And of the four or 5 million people that were lost, two or 3 million died, and another 2 million emigrated to America.

And let’s remember that in international law today, when you cause people to leave their homes and move away from their homes, that is considered genocide, also, when you throw people off their land. Now, what happened? Well, we know the potato crop failed. Okay? But what is never mentioned in the history books is that that was the only crop that failed. Wheat, barley, all the other farm cash crops were doing very, very well.

There were huge stores of food in Ireland as people were dying by the roadsides, their mouths green from eating grass. Okay. Women with their babies dying by the road. And the English, when they moved into Ireland, began to steal irish land.

This is what colonizers do. Instead of stealing the land from Indians in America, they were stealing it from the Irish. These Englishmen were Protestants. They not only stole irish land, they insisted that the Catholics become Protestants. And if they did not, it was considered by the English to be a reason to steal the land. And if you look, in 1500, all of the land in Ireland was owned by the Irish.

And just a century or so later, 80, 90% of the land was owned by the English. So they moved the Irish off of their land. Now, what did they do? This is in the 16 hundreds. Now, what did they do with those Irishmen? They moved off the land? Well, they did two things. There was a guy named Oliver Cromwell. He was a dictator in England. In fact, I think that was his title, and he was called a dictator.

In any case, he moved the Irish into the west, which was the worst farmland. He also put them on slave ships and shipped them to the West Indies and colonial America, where Irishmen were sold. Now, this is not indentured servitude. You’re going to think, whoa, I’m not exaggerating. Irishmen were sold on the slave block right alongside black people from Africa, put on slave ships, just like Africans. Many died on the way, and then they were sold on the slave block and worked as slaves in the West Indies and America.

And when I tell this to Irish Americans, they absolutely refuse to believe me. They walk away angry at me, the messenger. They won’t believe that this is part of their past. And this is where the intermingling of the irish and black Africans initially occurred. And this is one of the reasons you find so many black men with irish names. And when I suggest to black men, well dressed, middle class black men with irish names, that they participate in the St.

Patrick’s Day parade, they look at me the same way the Irish Americans do, and they get angry and they want no part of me. So people don’t take well to history, apparently, you know what I’m saying? Oh, there was something called the penal laws, okay, which happened at the beginning of the 17 hundreds, beginning of the 18th century, where the catholic religion was outlawed. So the persecution of the Irish, stealing their land, forcing them not to have their religion, the persecution was awesome.

So this starvation program was just the last straw. Now, how did it happen? Well, yes, there was a potato blipe that ruined the potato crop. The Irish, that’s all they ate. They couldn’t get the barley, the wheat, and the other crops because their land had been stolen. And those lands were owned by english gentry, and they were not about to part with any of their money or any of their crops.

So the Irish could not use the barley, the wheat, whatever, okay? So they were stuck strictly eating potatoes, and when that failed, they had nothing else to eat. Now, what happened to the barley, the wheat, and all that? Well, these very wealthy english landowners shipped all of that to England so the english people could be fed well at a lower price, because the more of the product you bring on the market in England, the better fed the English are, the lower price.

So Ireland, as the famine was going on, was the breadbasket for England. Now, England at the time, was responsible for Ireland. Ireland was a colony. Ireland was part of the. Well, we Irish refer to it as occupied territory, but it was part of the British Empire, part of the British Isles. And the English had an absolute responsibility to make sure these people didn’t die. A decision was made in the english treasury not to feed the Irish.

That’s what makes it a genocide. This was an official decision at the British treasury not to use any of the barley, the wheat, all of the bounty of Ireland to feed its people. They got Teddy Roosevelt and the bull Moose party running as a supposedly third candidate to siphon votes off so that Wilson could be elected as a socialist president. Now our eyes have been fixed on Moscow.

We’ve been led down the garden path ladies and gentlemen, all of the time we’ve been looking at Moscow and we’ve been told what demons they are in Moscow. Rightly so. But all the time this was going on, the Trojan horse of socialism in Washington, DC has been stealing our country away from us. To Jackson, one of the monster bank’s worst sins was that it was funding new style businesses that were beginning to wrap their tentacles around both the economy and the government. These new businesses were called corporations. The problem with corporations, as far as Jackson was concerned, was they had no body to be kicked or sold, to be damned. They were faceless, anonymous machines that were motivated only by making profit for their shareholders.

And as a result, they could grow much, much larger than the average consumer, the average worker, the average citizen. But Jackson’s opponents thought corporations would help America become more prosperous. And they thought his plan to blow up the bank burged on insanity. For it was the bank that guaranteed that the paper dollars in Americans’wallets were worth something. Jackson took a kind of fundamentalist view of money and credit.

Gold and silver dollars were real money. Paper was in some sense fake. Those who were perhaps more astute economists than Jackson thought that this position was just short of neanderthal. The United States had been built on credit. As Henry Clay said in the Senate, we have always been a paper money people. We won the revolution on paper money. Clay and his allies in Congress decided to put some heat on old hickory.

Near the end of Jackson’s first term, they passed a bill extending the bank’s charter. Clay calculated that the president would have no choice but to sign the bill because a veto would be seen by the american public as so irresponsible, it would cost Jackson reelection. Close. You. O just subtle and mighty opium. Thomas a Quincy, author of Confessions of an English Opium Eater, once described the pleasures of opium as nuclear. At the time, opium was sweeping its influence across the entire nation of China. It was an addiction that ranged from the mightiest of emperors to the lowest of peasants, destroying China economically and morally. The opium trade, the making of modern China. In the 18th century, Britain’s demand for tea and other chinese luxury goods, including porcelain and silk, rose drastically.

It was estimated an average London worker spent 5% of their total household budget on tea. Unfortunately, despite english obsession with chinese tea, China was unimpressed with the goods Britain had to offer. The heavy wool, machine made products held no interest in chinese market, thus leaving Britain to resort to trading silver for tea. China was essentially a silver sink, right? And that all of this cash was basically flowing from Britain to China.

It wasn’t until the late 17 hundreds when Britain discovered a product that would help the balance of payments run against China and in favor of Britain. The product was opium, cultivated in India. As Britain built a monopoly on the trade, China’s addiction grew with an estimated 12 million presence. Hooked on the substance. In the 18th century, when the exchange between opium and chinese luxury goods was at its peak, Britain balanced Congress with China by exploring a new form of trade with the powerhouse nation.

Unfortunately, the illicit trade led to the first and second Opium War, two conflicts in chinese history that would create chaos and humiliation in China for centuries to come, ending with the complete reform of China’s political, social, and economic future. As Britain began to pull ahead of western trade competitors, a privately owned company called the British East India Company began to dominate the trade industry. Unfortunately, trade with China was close to impossible.

Chinese refused. They refused to buy any british stuff. So in order to make a profit, the British decided to choose something that China’s looked at. As China continued to buy the opium up, Britain needed to explore ways to substantially increase trade to keep up with the demand. One of the factors that contributed to the drastic increase of opium being smuggled to China was the change in transportation. The need for fast, sturdy ships grew as trade between China and Britain increased.

Thus, the opium clipper was created. Built with narrow decks, large sail areas and multiple masts, the clipper became the fastest ship on sea in the 1830s. It could transport up to twice the amount of opium from Calcutta to China in a year than the bulky east indian men ships could. Due to China’s reluctance to trade with the west, Britain began to manipulate trade to smuggle opium across chinese borders.

The chinese government had set up a system known as the canton system to limit trade with the west. This allowed western merchants to trade in the poor city of Canton, but only with a group of 13 government authorized merchants called the Hong merchants. Despite the strictly controlled exchange, Brin found clever ways of getting around the law. The opium clippers from British India would often anchor just outside chinese territory.

Chinese merchants in a small ship known as crab boats or scramblers, would come out to the clippers, collect the opium, and smuggle the product up through the rivers and through the less police harbors. The opium trade forced Britain to explore not only new technology, but a new way of illicit trade in order to get around the bans and restrictions on opium. As the opium trade turned favor of Britain, China encountered a serious problem.

They were no longer the powerhouse country of the east, but appalled western trade tactics. It broke apart the country morally and economically. Still living by confucian perspective, China found very little need to tax trade because it didn’t contribute to the welfare of the people. Unfortunately, when the opium trade peaked, China’s government was unable to make up the lost silver due to the few taxes on trade. Some pragmatic government officials debated on whether to legalize the trade in order to make a profit.

But the immortality of using the trade trumped the legalization argument. The real expansion of the opium trade only began around 1834, when the East India Company began to lose its monopoly on the trade. As british merchants demanded more free trade. Britain’s government decided to end the East India Company’s domination. The cultivation of opium was no longer limited by the East India Company’s standard, so levels of production increased, causing the prices of opium to drop.

The cheap opium now available to all social classes addicted millions of Chinese. The narcotic decreased work ethic, yet increased crime. Levels of addiction grew so high it even began to corrupt the imperial troops and official classes as a whole. China’s born of heart so should found. With the immortality of the trade clear, the Dao Guang emperor finally sided with those who wanted to abolish the opium trade completely.

Taking action in 1838, he sent in one of his most trusted officials, Commissioner Lyn Zishu Lynn. Zishu had earlier published a memorial condemning the legalization of the drug and then cited the measures in which he had suppressed the drug traffic in certain provinces. The emperor, impressed by his technique, sent Zishu to Canton to eradicate the trade. In Canton, Commissioner Lin began by closing down opium dens and opium shops, arresting and executing some merchants publicly and imprisoning users of opium.

Then Seshu issued an ultimatum to british merchants. He said, look, I know that you are illegally trading in opium and I demand that you give up your opium stocks. We’re confiscating the opium from you because you know this is illegal. Eventually, Commissioner Norlin surrounded foreign factories containing the opium and forced merchants to surrender close to 3 million pounds of opium to him. Finishing off his eradication techniques. Xu washed out all of the opium deceit very publicly.

Bring immediately demanded compensation for the potential silver lost in the confiscated opium, arguing that it was an illegal transaction anyways, China steadfastly refused to pay Bryn any money. In response, Brin’s foreign secretary, Lord Palmerson sent a military force to compel the chinese government to compensate their loss. Small disagreements over the term of the treaty finally spurred the Second Opium War. In 1856. Lasting four years, Britain and France joined forces to take over the city Taijin in Beijing.

The Treaty of Taijin ended the second opium War with the terms that China was to open more ports for western use, thus opening the interior to missionaries and foreign envoys. After the two unequal treaties had been made, China began a downward spiral known as a century of humiliation. With China so open, western countries, including Russia, Britain and France, began to claim land and tear the country apart. Its already weak government was not able to support the country as it fell into an economic downfall.

Industries that couldn’t compete with the West’s machine made products collapsed and poverty spread across the country. They have gradually isolated themselves in ivory towers of intellectual superiority. And gazed down rather benignly, if at all, upon the world which they are supposed to regulate. They are simply incapable of the job. In the last 50 years, we’ve had the greatest advancements in science and education the world has ever known, and were in the worst condition it has ever been in. It is because our entire attitude toward survival has very little basic contact with the essential humanity which it is supposed to guide, direct, and advance.

There is a new humanism that is coming up, which it seems to me is well worth consideration. And that is the dignity, right, power, and authority of the folk. The folk is the great mass of people. And in its own natural environment, and with reasonable consideration, this folk is nearly always right. There is some basic value there which expresses itself through the simple and natural interests of average persons.

The average individual wishes to be a good parent, a good citizen, and a good child. He wants to live in a happy environment. He does not really cherish animosities. He is not addicted to the desire to be killed in war. Nor is he intentionally dedicated to an industrialism which gives him no opportunity to be a person. So all these situations means mean together that the leaders are out of touch with their followings.

And the followings, for the most part, have lost acceptances of their leaders. We do not want the condition to continue as it is, and yet to not allow it to go on. We must search for new resources of solution. At the present moment, we are depending upon science to develop the nuclear resources of the world. But they have found no way of disposing of the nuclear waste which threatens to destroy us all.

Thus, an attitude which can permits this to occur, that exceeds or excels its capacity to dominate, the consequences of its contacts and contributions, is simply no longer suitable to leadership. There has to be changes. And these changes can only occur when the human being realizes his inaliennable right to be human. And that he has within himself potentials that are far more real than any of the intellectual superstructure upon which he depends.

Today, man internally is part of the universe. He is part of the enormous diffusion of energies. He is as much part of the great plan as a star or a meteor or a comet. If he can go within himself far enough, he can find the laws of his own survival. But he has refused to have the opportunity to have this researching within himself. The moment he arrives in this world, he comes under the influence of this strange leadership of infallible errors with which we have all been afflicted.

He goes to school, but he is not taught to think. He is not taught to use his own resources. He is told to accept, to read the textbook and come to the same answer. If he does not come to that answer, he will not graduate. And if he will not graduate or does not graduate from school, then he cannot enter the institutions of higher learning. And if he doesn’t enter those and become proficient in the beliefs that they hold and become a willing perpetuator of the status quo.

If he will not do all these things, he is an outcast. He is then regarded as simply being a mediocre person wandering around in vagaries. This type of situation is getting to be a little too difficult. We are all sympathetic. As we see these great monuments rise to human ingenuity. We realize how young people can become utterly fascinated with computers, how they can also become entranced with the possibility of making a trip someday to the moon.

These things are tremendous inducements and are passed off constantly as indications of progress. But no one is paying any attention to the sewerage. Out of these predicaments that we are passing through is a vast byproduct of waste, a byproduct of danger, of war, a product of epidemical diseases, of disturbance of Earth’s balance, of disruption of crops. All these things are the results of unthought out programs in which no one is interested in doing anything except landing on the planet somewhere else and has no time or thought to take care of the planet that we live on today.

Now, it’s very hard to convince people that we should be more thoughtful in these matters. But as press report after each other, many of them show the difficulties and the dangers of all these situations brought home to us almost every day. Something should be done. But the great remote body of the approved professionals does not pay any attention to these rumors at all. They arise from the unenlightened, whereas those of special privileges and special educational dedications go right on adding to the mess.

So, out of it, I think we have to find out where we stand in relation to ourselves. We have been given a terrible inferiority complex. The average individual bows hopelessly and helplessly before the wisdom of the elect. He is afraid to express himself because he will open his environment to ridicule. He is not sure of himself because he has been talked down. From the time he was old enough to read and write.

He is, therefore in a confused state. And has forgotten that of all the devices that man has developed. He will never develop one as important as that which was bestowed upon him by nature himself. This is the burden that we have to study more and more carefully these days. If we are looking for solutions to problems, there is no use looking where problems are being made and never solved.

If we want to find out how to survive. We must gradually discover what is threatening our survival. And do what we can to correct it. Somewhere within the individual, if he digs deeply into himself, there is a mysterious faculty. That perhaps we can call common sense. It is, in likelihood, the basic qualities of mind. It is that intellection which has been given to all of us. By a power greater than ourselves.

The mind is an instrument to be used, not to be abused. Its uses must always solve something. Its abuses must always tear down something. Now, the mind being a mysterious instrument. Which no one has been able to accurately define. And our higher professionals do not even attempt it. Because to do so, they would be forced to examine causes and factors they wish to ignore. But the mind remains as the one saving hope.

In this particular emergency. Somewhere within each individual is a kind of solutional power. Which should be cultivated instead of inhibited. The moment we find that a child has a mind to think with. We should help it to think with that mind. Thinking is very different from accepting somebody else’s thoughts. Thinking is not to be gained simply by reading a textbook. And agreeing with the author. Or, for that matter, disagreeing with the author.

The real fact of the matter is that every effort today is made. To prevent the actual positive use of the mind. It is being cultured to become an instrument. We are trying to make the mind into a robot. We want to have a mind that will serve situations that are essentially false. We want a mind that will agree with the prevailing policy. Even though that policy is going nowhere actually.

Therefore, each of us must become capable of using the mind. With which we have been endowed by a life greater than our own. Actually, the tendency to break away from the conventional and the conservative. Is growing every day. We are more and more aware that we are the victims of something that is not right. We realize as we stand closer and closer. To the possible wars of the worlds.

That have been, well, dramatized in motion pictures. We know something is wrong, or these conditions would not and could not exist. They do not exist because humanity as a group wants them or that they serve humanity in any way. They have continued because small groups of ambitious persons want to play chess with the human destiny. They are not concerned with trying to solve problems. They are inclined only to consider the possibility of further advancements in some highly specialized structure of municipal warfare.

Police say it was a human sacrifice gone wrong.
