Summary
➡ The late-night show of Jimmy Kimmel, which was paused due to controversial remarks, is set to return on ABC. However, broadcasters Sinclair and Nextstar, who own over 60 ABC affiliates, will not air Kimmel’s show, replacing it with news programming. This decision has sparked discussions about First Amendment rights and the influence of President Trump. The situation is seen as a business move, reflecting the shift in media consumption towards independent creators and streaming platforms.

Jimmy Kimmel. So, we have to make sure that we fully understand the context of this conversation when we talk about Jim Dogg, alright? So, Jimmy Kimmel, it was recently announced that tonight on this Tuesday, if you’re watching this on a clip and we clipped it up, then listen, you already know he’s already on the air. But tonight, Jimmy Kimmel will be going live. He’s back on the air. But with some caveats, we’ll get there. Again, make sure y’all hit a like for the algorithm. Disney is bringing him back on the air tomorrow.
ABC says in a statement that we made the decision last week to suspend production to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment. But now, after having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, ABC says we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday. So, Kimmel’s getting back to work. Wow. Brian, that is significant, especially given that some of the players outside of Disney in a corporate setting like Next Star and Sinclair, they essentially have deals that allowed them to preempt his show. And that’s part of the reason that it was suspended.
Do we know how they might react to this? We don’t. And that becomes the big question now. Will these local station affiliates choose to air Jimmy Kimmel live or will they continue to protest the comedian even though the network is bringing him back nationwide? We’re going to talk about that tonight, DJ Retroactive. We’re talking about that tonight on After Hours. I got you. I got it all. Trust me, we’re producing our butts off nowadays. ABC does gently chastise Kimmel in this statement. The statement says, quote, the decision to suspend him.
We made it because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. So they’re very gently saying they disagreed with Kimmel last week, but obviously they’re bringing it back as of tomorrow. And we don’t know, obviously, all of the considerations that went into this, Brian. But I would say leaders, obviously, at ABC and Disney have had the benefit of a few days of feedback, including from Disney employees who were very disturbed, including from Hollywood stars and showrunners, the kind of people Disney wants to work with and from free speech groups, politicians, even some Republican politicians like Jack Cruz.
We know the condemnation of Disney has been widespread. Now, what we don’t know yet is what the counter reaction will be from President Trump and his allies. I think that the last thing that Jimmy Kimmel has to worry about, maybe not even just Jimmy Kimmel, because Jimmy Kimmel has been getting money for a long time. So I would assume that he has a huge stack and that he’s well invested. And it doesn’t really matter whether he’s still on air or not. If he was smart, which a lot of these people aren’t and they live in paycheck to paycheck, just like everybody else, their lifestyle is not reflective of their income.
But I don’t know that for sure. I’m just speculating. But if Jimmy Kimmel was smart, this wouldn’t be affecting them in either way. And he’s just doing it because this is what he loves to do. And he continues to make money from it. And so that’s a plus. But it’s the people that surround Jimmy Kimmel that probably should be a little bit more concerned. Right. The producers, the acts on Jimmy Kimmel, the staff, all of the people whose jobs depend on it, which they should have been preparing and seeing a writing on the wall.
And if they were smart, I would all day long be trying to figure out how what my next movie is. And I would not be waiting on Disney and ABC to make sure that I have a job. If they were smart, they would have been pivoting a long time ago and would have seen this coming. However, I don’t think with the falling ratings and if we just looking at it from a business perspective, the fact that streaming services, Netflix, YouTube, alternative forms of entertainment is taken over in late night TV shows dying anyway, in addition to the fact that he’s just really not that funny to me, I would assume that Disney is not looking to renew Jimmy Kimmel’s contract once it’s up.
Let’s continue. That’s a really good point. Brian, please stand by. Harry, your reaction to this news is great news. It’s great news. And I think you’re absolutely right. And Brian is absolutely right. This was a community standing up for the rights of Jimmy Kimmel and all people who speak in public, entertainers and were journalists and all of them. And it worked at least with the head of Disney. And it makes good sense because they would have won in court. One thing that gets lost in this, you do not lose your First Amendment rights because you have a broadcast license.
The Supreme Court has been clear on this. The government cannot take your license because of speech they don’t like. You were talking about for whatever reason. And I don’t know. We got these guys with gray hair, snow hairs and nice suits on the Internet and online and on CNN and on national TV. And it’s almost like, you know what I want you all to figure out? You know what I want you all to realize one day, I won’t try to stop doubting yourself. I want you to stop doubting yourself.
Why am I saying that? Because you guys think that just because they are on a bigger network or they are on national TV or they are older or they may be white or something like that, that they automatically know what they’re talking about. And I will tell you that they don’t. And if you start to challenge yourself, you’ll realize that you may be a lot smarter than these people, depending on what the subject is, because it is very clear to me that your First Amendment rights and freedom of speech does not absolve you from freedom from consequences.
And so freedom of speech does not mean that you cannot get fired if it does not align with the direction of your employer. Now, whatever contract details that they may have, that may be a bigger issue, right? His contract could be guaranteed for the next two to three more years or whatever, right? He could get a payout regardless of whether he’s on air or not. There’s a lot more to it than just that, but the reality is that most places or most people are at will employees. If you don’t perform, if your numbers is not good enough or whatever, then they can remove you on air.
If they don’t like what you say it because it doesn’t align with the ethos that come along with what it is that they got going on, they can remove you from on air. Catherine Graham, when the news broke, and these are the considerations of these bigger companies about how they’re going to handle this and how they’re going to think about it. They do have the benefit of some history as they do consider these moves. Right. Well, Catherine Graham, when Nixon threatened to take her FCC, the Washington Post FCC licenses, they had some local stations.
It was a main source of income. She published them anyway. She said, forget about it. And that kind of corporate courage is rare, especially into the face of an administration that exceeds by many orders of magnitude any other presidency trying to silence speech it doesn’t like. If we still have Brian, I want to go back to him because one of the interesting bits of reporting that we got over the last few days was that Kimmel was actually preparing a monologue that would up the ante against some of the feedback that he got from the Trump administration.
I mean, can you imagine Brian? What might be formulating in terms of a response when he gets back on the air? Right. Kimmel wanted to defend himself. So now Tuesday night monologue becomes even more interesting. What he will be critical and it might affect what local stations decide to do going forward. Yeah, certainly will. Um, the I want to know what you think, Terry, about, um, just sort of the moment that we’re in when it comes to free speech. And I also want to play a moment from the White House press briefing today.
This was a correspondent for turning point USA frontline associated with the group that Charlie Kirk founded, who asked the White House press secretary what her message is to Americans who are too afraid to express their beliefs. Here’s a brief part of what I’m gonna get into that, uh, in a separate video on the Anton Daniels Channel, Kirsten Caroline Levitt said we have a right to free speech in this country. The president supports it. It is protected by our beautiful Constitution and Americans should not cower in fear. They should rise up in courage to continue speaking the truth.
What do you think about what you’re hearing from the White House? There is we just get this news that Jimmy Kimmel will return to air tomorrow night. Right. Well, see what the White House says. Everybody should speak up except the ones that the president doesn’t like. He just barked at my former colleague, Jonathan Carl. Maybe we’ll come after you because I don’t like the content of your news coverage. All of this is bedrock First Amendment rights that we all have. And I think I think they’ve overreached here. Most Americans, even many, many who support President Trump did not like the kind of gangster talk that the head of the FCC said.
You know, you can do this the easy way. You can do it the hard way. And they understand how precious this right is, even for people that they disagree strongly with. There’s good common sense about our First Amendment rights. And I think Trump is running up against that. Yeah, I don’t think that this has anything to do with Trump whatsoever at all. I would argue that the people that are actually protesting whether or not it’s online or whatever, I would argue that most of those people don’t even watch Jimmy Kimmel.
I would argue that most of those people are not staying up late at night to watch Jimmy Kimmel. At all whatsoever. Not at all. This don’t have nothing to do with the FCC. The FCC didn’t cancel Jimmy Kimmel. As a matter of fact, not only did the FCC not play a role in canceling Jimmy Kimmel, even with him coming back online, several different media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, is reporting that Sinclair and Nextstar will not air Jimmy Kimmel’s late night return once he goes back on air tonight. Now, I don’t know how long that’s going to last.
I don’t know if this is permanent, but according to reports, Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show will resume broadcasting on ABC Tuesday. Disney said days after report the show indefinitely during controversy over the host’s remarks about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk broadcasters Nextstar and Sinclair, which combined own and operate over 60 ABC affiliates that reach 22% of US households, said they still planned to replace Kimmel’s show with news programming starting Tuesday night. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return. Sinclair said in a statement Nextstar said it plans to continue carrying local news and other programming instead of show.
The company said it stands by its decision to preempt the show pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful constructive dialogue and markets that we serve. So what y’all don’t understand is that the reason why Disney started having a conversation with Jimmy Kimmel in the first place is because Sinclair and Nextstar were the ones that said we don’t want this type of rhetoric to take place inside of the markets that we serve. Trump then said I don’t rock with Jimmy Kimmel anyway and so he’s a hack he’s trash and I’m glad that’s what’s happening to him is happening to him and so what people don’t understand is that this had nothing to do with whether or not you feel some type of way about him getting canceled.
Y’all gotta remove this cancel word out of your vocabulary. When you are a partner with a network or if you are a partner with a company or if you work for a company or if you have a boss you are subjected to the terms by which they deem necessary in order to continue to work with them. If you don’t like that then you cannot work with them and so I actually think that this is very bad for Disney which I don’t really care about Disney but it is what it is.
I think that this is very bad for Disney because Disney is now stuck between a rock and a hard place because they got a host that refused to do what they supposed to do and play ball and so you make it difficult on your employer because you don’t want to do what you’re supposed to do. Now Disney is trying to figure out how to bridge the gap between Sinclair and Nexstar so that they can try to maximize the amount of money that they can possibly get from advertisers and then have that money funneled up because Disney is already in a troublesome position in the first place.
People that don’t know business speaking on situations that is completely business related. I was having this conversation on after hours last Tuesday or Wednesday no last last last Friday Thursday and Friday and I said I think that this is business. I think it’s 100% business related I agree Dean Murray he says sounds like an opportunity to cut losses I agree I agree Late night TV is dying. Small local news shows are dying. You know who is continuing to rise up? You know who continuing to rise up? People like me streamers and dependent creators that then partner with companies that want to sponsor their shows.
YouTube is the biggest platform and it’s so funny because I remember when people used to say stuff like oh you just see youtuber oh youtube ah they just on youtube and stuff like that now you got everybody and they mama trying to start a podcast it’s us it’s us it’s the creators it’s the people that stood tall that stand ten tones down they built their own platform from the ground up they got it out the mud we the next wave I mean for god’s sakes Michelle Obama is on YouTube it’s us we got staff we got people that work for us we got big production studios we got everything that we need and we continue to reinvest in ourselves and we in the streets and we out grinding people it’s us and if you don’t think that the Disney’s and all of these other places is aware of this and that they’re trying to adjust while at the same time serve the audience that they currently have then you lost in the sauce you are absolutely lost in the sauce
