Summary

➡ The video is about a camping trip in the Ozarks, where the benefits of having a Camp Tech installation in an SUV are highlighted. The SUV, an 80 series right-hand drive turbo diesel from Japan, was modified by Ozark Overland Outfitters and Camp Tech, turning it into an ultimate off-road vehicle. The modifications include a rooftop tent, a slide-out kitchen, a 17-gallon water tank, a 60-liter storage container, and even a 12-volt toilet. The cost of such modifications ranges from $40,000 to $50,000, but the video presenter believes it’s worth the price for the convenience and functionality it provides.
➡ The article talks about a camping trip where the author admires the ingenuity and workmanship of Jason’s HDJ 81 series Land Cruiser, which was built by Camp Tech. The vehicle has a well-designed layout that includes a stainless steel water pump, a Puma Air tank, and a cooking setup that can be deployed quickly. Despite some challenges on the trail, including getting stuck and dealing with difficult weather conditions, the author expresses his admiration for the vehicle’s capabilities and his regret for not having a similar setup for his own vehicle.
➡ We faced a challenging situation while trying to reach our campsite. Night was falling, it was raining, and the trail was at risk of flooding. To prevent Jason’s truck from tipping over, I had to clear two large trees and use my truck to secure his. Despite the difficulties, we made it to the campsite and learned a valuable lesson about how weather can drastically change situations.

In this video, I found myself once again down in the Ozarks. And we were gonna go out for a camping trip in 100 series, an 80 series and of course my four runner. A simple camping trip to highlight the advantages of having a Camp Tech installation done in your suv. That’s all it was. Simple camping, no big deal. We’ll take a road we’ve taken dozens of times before. What could possibly go wrong? Well, I’ll show you myself. Jeff and Jason are heading out into the back country for the evening, trying to keep an eye on you.

But I’m trying to watch, trying to keep an eye on what he’s doing so I don’t fall into it. Hold on, hold on, Jason. Jason. Hold on, driver. Easy. Good, good, good. You got it, you got it. So you see, we had quite the adventure. So this video is going to be kind of a two parts, two part piece here we’ll call it. First, I’m going to show you the ultimate 80 series. We’re talking about an 80 series right hand drive turbo diesel from Japan on 37 inch tires, completely hooked up by Ozark Overland Outfitters. And then Jason just lost his entire mind and dropped the truck off for three months to Eric from Camp Tech and turned it into, I have to say it, the absolute ultimate off Road Overland 80 series on Earth.

Because this thing is exquisite. And ironically, after I filmed this entire thing, we almost rolled it over. No joke, no exaggeration, I was there and I’ve got the evidence. So here we go. First part’s going to be the camp Tech. The second part’s going to be our off roading adventure that almost destroyed this truck. For those that want to see the build out that Ozark Overland Outfitters did on this HDJ 81 series from Japan, the video is up on my channel. Links will be below. But in this video we’re going to focus on what Camp Tech did to this truck after Ozark Overland Outfitters was done with it.

And the build out is just unbelievable. Now I had my doubts about Camtek because I always thought to myself, once you build out the back of an 80 series, someone my size 230 pounds isn’t going to be able to fit in there. Yes, I was wrong. Very, very wrong. Because all you do is you simply step on the 60 liter Alubox storage container that goes with this build out. You slide right in on the nice glossy bamboo and there is plenty of room. You, you don’t have to crouch down. You can access the shelf in the front of the camp Tech or you can pull down the main mattress and two guys can sit in there, or a couple can sit in there, no problem at all.

So it turns out I was indeed completely wrong. I was completely wrong. Two grown men can sit in the back of this truck and play Texas hold’ em no problem. It’s unbelievable how well and how thought out this entire setup was. So here we go. Prior to and during the editing of this video, I tried to get a hold of Eric and he responded several times. But then I completely lost him. From what I can gather to get what Jason had done to his truck, done to your truck, including all the vehicles that you see listed above, including the 4Runner, you’re looking at about 40 to $50,000.

That’s with the rooftop tent, the top of your truck being cut off, and the entire assembly being installed. It could vary a little bit, but that’s what you’re looking at. And from what I saw, it was well worth the cost of admission in my opinion. Okay, this just in. Eric from camp tech did just get back to me and here’s what he had to say. The full build with a pop top, cabinets, kitchen, 17 gallon stainless water tank. Weighs less than 250 pounds over stock. Curb weight after removal of the seats, sunroof, sheet metal, and the hardware.

And it’s 16,000 for a pop top. Cut your roof off, put the pop top on powder coated, welded and L track with custom mattress and installation. For a full build like what Jason has, it’s 36 to 40,000, including the pop top, depending on custom design, etc. Now that’s pretty much what I had told you, but he puts a nail on it. So there it is. That’s what it costs. But I gotta tell you, and you’ll see for yourself, this is well worth it. So you’ve got a rooftop tent on your truck that two people can sleep in.

You can get in and out from the back of the truck. You can get in and out from the side of the truck like my alu cab. Except the entire thing weighs. We’re talking the entire thing plus the entire build out in the back cost weighs the same as my alucab sitting on a front runner Slimline two. That’s insane. And the center of gravity is much, much lower. Now my alucab and slimline from front runner is going to cost you around 4, $500. This cost slightly more, but it is what it is. There’s a lot of work to it, and in my opinion, it’s well worth it we’re seeing people put portal axles on their vehicles that cost the same.

So it’s all about what you want in your, in my opinion and what you get for that is a Camp Tech two person live aboard interior with slide out kitchen. 17 gallon stainless water tank with baffles. Like I had mentioned earlier, a 50 liter national Luna dual zone fridge freezer, which is what I have and it’s been in my truck and literally running for 621 days, days straight. No issues whatsoever at all. You get a 60 liter Alubox storage container which is phenomenal. It fits right into the build and you can use it as a step to get on top of it.

And it also comes with a wrap on 12 volt toilet. You don’t know what that is. It’s a trip. It is a trip. Check this out. This toilet is fixed in place in the back of the truck. You do your business in it and then you hit the button and it seals up the bag like a little bag of Jiffy Pop. No smell, no muss, no fuss. I’ve seen it in action. It’s amazing. And Eric somehow builds this right into the back of the truck. No big deal. Nothing to see here, nothing to smell here. All is well.

It’s insane and it uses very little power. Now I’m going to show this entire thing in action because we actually took this out camping where we almost rolled the 80 series. But Eric integrated everything into this so well that the two cutting boards that he gives you can be slid in place and you can use this as an additional sleeping area. And I mean it’s legit, it holds up. It’s astonishing how well and how compact and how well thought out everything is. I can’t say that enough. But he’s been doing this a long time, you know what I’m saying? Definitely been doing it a long time.

And every tip and trick he can think of, he incorporated into this kit for you, you know what I mean? He uses half inch Baltic birch laminated with an ABS plastic and he uses bamboo resin poured bamboo Floor in this truck is beautiful. It looks like the basketball court at your high school gym. It’s a beautiful, beautiful setup. The storage in this thing and the hardware on the storage is phenomenal. You can literally fit a 200amp hour lithium battery and a 2500 watt inverter in there. All your spare parts, everything has a place and nothing rattles around and it’s all incredibly secure.

And the durability of the finish is astonishing. And right here is the toilet. See the little four latch square to the left? That’s the toilet. It’s insane and it works. You can literally use everything and it works. You’re not hunched over, you’re not crouching down. It’s a phenomenal setup. It’s not what I thought it was going to be until Jason and I were both in it at the same time. There’s so much storage in this truck, it puts my entire setup to shame. And my entire setup has been on the road 10 years. And I thought I had it modified and dialed in to as small and light as it could possibly be.

But this shines a whole different light on the subject. There’s your toilet right there, right between the passenger driver’s seat. You hit the four little latches, it pops right up. And there is your made in Japan pooping area. Hermetically sealed, good to go. Five by five. Unbelievable. He builds a diesel heater and ducts as well as a thermostat right into it. So it’s. You don’t even see it. Out of sight, out of mind. It is a beautiful setup if you can see past my fingers. And he also does the headliner by hand. He hand custom stitches this and installs this by hand.

So I mean, this is just beyond beautiful. You get what you pay for. He is not holding back whatsoever at all. He’s earning every dollar you’re giving him. It’s amazing. So I’m trying not to forget anything, but there’s so much to see in here. And just this, the layout, the way he cut in venting into the woodwork so the refrigerator can actually get air. The way he incorporated all the pumping, the wiring, the hoses for the 17 gallon stainless steel water pump is just astonishing. It all fits in so well. It has so much more to offer than my setup and somehow seems to take up less room.

I just don’t get it. But it’s incredibly well done. And in a moment, I’m going to show you this thing in the wild. It also allows for a full, full size 120 volt Puma Air tank, which is insane. That is a big compressor that fills up the 37s a hell of a lot quicker than my arb twin or my Extreme Air Magnum did. And it runs off 120. How crazy is that? But here’s a look at the entire setup in action. As we got to the camp last time we were here, this river was up and this entire landscape has changed exponentially.

Jason’s cooking up some burgers Jeff’s got his chair set up, he’s got his rooftop tent set up. His new hundred series, we just took it on a death run. And it worked. And it worked. So because I’m focusing on the camp tech build out of Jason’s HDJ 81 series Land Cruiser, I’m going to show you what it looked like when we got to the camp before I show you how we got to the camp because I want to focus on this build up because I am in no way tied to camp tech. This is not a sponsored video.

This is just an observation by somebody that’s seen every type of build out there possibly is Goose gear Trek box, every type of high end build out I’ve seen in real life and camp tech. This build out completely blows it away in ingenuity, workmanship and materials. It just is leaps and bounds beyond. So let me show you what it looks like when as soon as we pulled up, Jason just deployed it and started cooking. Within minutes we simply pulled up, he deployed the rear end. In less than a minute he had hamburger out and he was forming patties.

The water was already hooked up, the drain hose is already set up and the propane is already hooked up to the cook partner stove that Kamtek modifies to fit into this system perfectly flawlessly. I’d have to say I can wake up, I don’t have to open the back end up. It’s just right there and I can, I can fire it up and do my coffee. Yeah, just right there. Ready to go. Yep. That is nice. I mean between Camtek and Delta, this is, this is got to be the ultimate rig, right? Or at least the ultimate 80.

It’s going to be the ultimate 80. I told you, I’ve seen a lot of 80s, man, turbo diesel, right hand drive. So there you have it. I’ve shown you everything I can possibly think of about the camp tech setup. The material, the workmanship is second to none. I have to say it, I am completely jealous that I didn’t get a camp tech even though I wanted one so very bad for my 80 series. And I guess I just kind of forgot about it when I got the 4Runner. But if I had done this to my 4Runner, it’d be a whole different vehicle completely.

It’d be a heck of a lot lighter, it’d be a heck of a lot lower center of gravity and the workmanship just blows this away. I have a generation three alucab that I’ve had for less than a year and already both zippers on Both sides have ripped. It took me four years to rip the zippers on my old alucab, but the new one, not so much. This is a truly unique, one of a kind setup. And if you want one of these, hit up Eric and tell him I sent you. Or don’t. It’s your call. But let’s take a look at the road.

It took us to get to this lovely camping spot because this was the end of the day. Jason had finished up the workday, the shop was closed down. About 6 o’, clock, we headed to the grocery store and then we headed up the trail. A trail that we’ve both taken dozens and dozens of times. And Jason’s probably taken it a hundred times. And because of the weather, the trails had changed and not for the better. This was scary, Sam. So within a minute, literally of airing down and hitting the trail, out of all the vehicles, Jason’s 37 inch tire locked front and rear turbo diesel gets stuck.

That should have been a harbinger. We should have taken note of that and acted accordingly. But sadly, we didn’t. We took it all in good fun, no big deal. He got hooked up and high, centered in a ditch that he didn’t know was there. Because if you look to the left and right of us, there’s ditches everywhere. The trail is not there anymore. But we pulled him out, persevered and carried on simply, this would be, you know, obviously this would be the only problem we would have that day, or so we thought. But next up, it was my turn to get stuck because immediately after winching Jason out, I was following him through a very, very twisty ditch.

And then I got stuck. But with a little back and forth motion, I was able to get myself unstuck. But this was starting to lay a path for the day. As soon as we hit the trail, both of the trucks on 37s are getting stuck and winched. Meanwhile, the -hundred series on 33s. It’s doing just fine. It’s astonishing. And then once again, it was my turn. I’m following Jason. Jeff is behind us in the 100 series, and I go up the trail just like Jason did. But apparently my rear end slipped into a rut and I had three wheel motion because I was alternating between my front tire coming way off the ground, which you can kind of see in the footage, and my rear tire coming off the ground.

Whenever I tried to back up, I was in a tough spot. Now this was getting completely crazy because every single time we took a, a turn or went over a Hill, something else horrible would happen. But if you look to the passenger side of my truck, look at the size of the ditch. Well, look at the size of the ditches on both sides. And we don’t have very much road. This didn’t, this wasn’t the case. This was never the trail. The trail was, was fun, but it was never. This was just straight up dangerous. This was dangerous.

And it was every 200 yards myself or Jason was getting stuck one way or the other. I don’t know if Jeff is just the best driver in the world or if that hundred series is just the most capable vehicle ever produced or if he was watching what we were doing and then not doing it because Jason was way ahead of me. So I would follow him the best I could, but every once in a while I would slip into a ditch and Jason drove my truck. He’s driving my truck right now. I’m filming because I was just too shook.

I was. Every time I tried to get out, it was getting worse and worse and worse. And time was ticking and it started raining, of course. But Jason said the same thing. He said when he got in my truck, he couldn’t believe how wide my forerunner was compared to his HDJ 81. And he couldn’t believe how hard it was to see over the hood. So that’s one thing that I remedied. But this day was just getting crazier. But then it got really bad. It. Oh, did you? But just when it looks like we’re out of the woods, we’re making it to the last, last heavy duty stretch.

There’s two more up and downs we have to negotiate. I’m rolling behind Jason and I’m noticing something strange. It looks like. It looks like he’s getting into a bit of trouble, but I’m like, certainly he knows what he’s doing. He’s done this trail hundreds of times because I’ve done this trail dozens of times. And then this happens. Oh, come on, dude. Jason. Oh, this is a no go. He’s at the top of a steep decline and he has to turn driver’s side to go down. Now remember, he’s driving a right hand drive vehicle, so he’s sitting on the opposite side.

But I’m looking at him thinking, this is how you roll over. This is exactly what you don’t do. But he didn’t have a choice, and his rear tire fell into a ditch. So this was an emergency. So much so I had just given the keys to my, my truck and let Jason drive my truck up an obstacle which I’ve never done once in my life. But that’s how harrying this trail was, if that’s even a word. So we had to do some drastic measures here, which we would normally never do. But remember, nightfall is within minutes.

It’s already raining out. If this trail gets flooded while we’re on it, we’re screwed. So we had to figure out a plan and it involved doing this. I had to go up onto the tree line and. And clear away two very large downed trees because I was going to have to drive my truck up and around this in order to get a winch on Jason’s driver’s side so that his truck didn’t roll while he tried to relocate it so that he didn’t tip his truck over. But I mean, this was just utterly ironic. We were simply doing this so I could make a camp tech video and we almost destroy the truck that we’re trying that I’m focusing on.

You know what I’m saying? This was crazy, but this is what it looked like. It’s. It’s. Is this poison oak? I got scrubbing. All right, where do you want me to h. Listen, you want. Can you relay for us cuz I can’t hear. I got the beer off, so hold on there. Listen, you want. Can you relay for us cuz I can’t hear that. What do you think? Not as bad as I thought it was. What do you want me to do? Okay, we’ll get in it. Get me a little slide back. I’m gonna try to crawl up that ridge.

Okay. Do you need Jeff on that side? No. Jeff, jump over here then so you can relay cuz I can’t hear my ear. Hold on. Hold on, Jason. Jason, hold. Yeah. So finally we get him orientated and we start making our way towards the last hill climb, which you can see off in the distance. And at this point, Jason does something I’ve never seen him do. He says, let’s turn around because that last hill is bad. This is insane. We’re simply going camping. That was it. This was supposed to. To be our trail to the campsite.

And everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Except for Jeff and his hundred series. He just kept on putting through, no problem whatsoever at all. So we finally made it to the campground and all was pretty much well. We camped for the night. It rained a little bit, but that was good to go. It’s always good for sleeping, etc. But man, always remember the weather changes everything big time. I’ve never let anybody else drive my truck. I’ve never seen Jason not get out of his truck because he was in a bind and we had all of those things right here.

At any rate, if you enjoyed this video, hit that, like, share and subscribe and leave a comment below. Tell us what we did wrong or what you would have done more right. I’m out.
