They’re no longer just meeting with Carol Demetriev. They’re now meeting with Vladimir Medinsky, who works directly for President Putin and Mikhail Golusin, who’s the deputy foreign minister. Sergei Sergi Lavrov is not there, but a team of Russian senior officials is there. Medinsky is an interesting individual. When people talk about potential successors to Vladimir Putin, Medinsky’s name is there. He’s a trusted lieutenant of Vladimir Putin. When they resumed the talks in Istanbul a couple years ago, Medinsky led that negotiation. He’s a serious player, and this means that they’re now getting to the nuts and bolts of a deal.

It also, I think, is a power play by the Russians. In effect, calling America on its bluff, the United States keeps saying that it wants a deal, it wants a deal, it wants a deal. Russia finally brought the guys that can make the deal. These are the deal makers, and the pressure now will be transferred to Ukraine, because Zelensky has made it clear that he’s not going to accept any aspect of the deal that’s currently on the table.
