And a big shout out to today’s sponsor, Sonoran Desert Institute. If you’re looking for a way to start or advance your career in firearms technology, SDI has the courses to get you there. More on them later. Suppressors are currently regulated under the National Firearms Act, the NFA, and the Gun Control Act, the GCA. That means that if you want one, you have to jump through a ridiculous amount of federal hoops that are there just to try to keep you from getting them. Right now, if you want a suppressor, you have to submit two copies of ATF Form 4.
Fill out the ATF Form 5330.20. Get certification from your local law enforcement chief official. Provide two copies of your fingerprints, submit two passport photos, pay a $200 tax stamp, and then you have to wait, and wait, and wait. On average, it’s a 9 to 12 month wait for them to complete your background check just for the safety accessory that protects your hearing. It doesn’t have a trigger. It doesn’t do anything by itself. It doesn’t even have one of those angled things that go up. It just protects your hearing. It’s absolutely ridiculous. The Shush Act would cut through all of that government overreach and fix the problem.
Here’s how. It would remove suppressors from the NFA and the GCA, treating them like any other firearm accessory, like a handguard, like a stock, like a magazine. It would prohibit states from imposing taxes or registration requirements on suppressors, and it would eliminate the $200 transfer tax. This means no more waiting, no more tax stamps, and no more treating suppressors like some Hollywood assassin tool. Suppressors are not silent. Despite what movies tell you, they do not do anything other than reduce the harmful noise levels and make shooting safer, not only for the shooter, but everybody in the environment.
The government has no business making them hard to get. Now, Congressman Mike Cloud put it perfectly when he said, quote, suppressors are a vital tool for responsible gun owners that protect hearing, enhance safety, and reduce firearm noise. But thanks to Hollywood and federal overreach, they’ve been unfairly vilified. He’s right. The Shush Act is about safety and common sense. And Senator Mike Lee had this to say, quote, despite what Hollywood may lead you to believe, silencers aren’t silent, and they aren’t just for secret agents. Making them prohibitively difficult to obtain is an assault on the Second Amendment.
Now, these guys are fighting for our rights, but they can’t do it alone. This is where you come in. If we want the Shush Act, the Hearing Protection Act, national reciprocity, or any other pro 2A legislation to pass while we currently hold a Republican controlled White House, Senate, Congress, House of Representatives, and a pro 2A Supreme Court, we have to make our voices heard. Pick up your phone and call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121. Ask for your senators and representatives. Tell them you want them to support the Shush Act and explain why.
Do it today, do it often, but do it. Politicians respond to pressure, so let’s give it to them. That’s the latest on the fight for your Second Amendment rights. Thank you for watching, patriots. Stay safe, stay armed, and stay free. I’ll see you in the next one. Take care, America. [tr:trw].
