And oftentimes the desert temperatures soar to the point where not too many things can live out here. But this is an off roading channel and I’m going to show you a place that makes the Rubicon Moab look easy, quick and tame. We’re going with Sandy Cats out into the back country of the Calico Desert. Four wheel drive and full armor is absolutely necessary. So here it is. So let’s get right into it. Let’s see what we’re working with here. Here’s the crew. We started out with two 5th gen 4 runners, a 3rd gen 4 runner in several really well built 80 series RPM garage.
There’s the owner, Stephen, right there. We had a taco that joined us on the first day and then we had Felix in his GX460. He didn’t join us for the second day and I don’t blame him because he would have destroyed his beautiful truck. So we had Oleg and Justin from Sandy Cats, my truck’s twin brother from Sandy Cats. And we also had several 80 series. Like I said prior, but in a video I did before testing tow ropes, there was a young fellow in a 3rd gen 4 runner that was pulling a guy in a rowboat behind him.
And oddly enough they were here. So you know what, I’ll let them explain it. You’ll see this is epic. Do you see this? N and they are flying. That is epic. So this gives you an idea of what kind of day on the trail this is going to be. And wisely, the young fellow that’s in the hammock right there, that’s Tony. I gave him a camera to run with all day long and some of the best footage you’re going to see in this video that dude right there got for me. So Tony is the man, as is his brother Mikey.
So with everybody ready to go all amped up, all fed, all fueled, ready to roll. We headed out and it was like going up a really, really scary roller coaster because as we progressed, it got progressively worse. But how about this? I’ll shut up and show it. Here we go. So this was day one. We still had the taco and we still had the Lexus with us, Felix’s Lexus with us. And we did some really gnarly, tight, tight trails. Trails like most people usually have never seen. Canyon walls and valley. So here we go. We’re about to enter something that is absolutely exclusive to California.
We’re going to run through this maze that is just barely wide enough to fit an 80 series. And it is intense because you can’t see what’s beside you, behind you, or in front of you. You just got to trust the guy in front of you is doing the right thing. And that’s what I did. And I thought this was something, but this ain’t nothing. But here it is. It. It. It’s always. It’s always a nice surprise. Yeah, I didn’t know. I’ve never been out here too, so I’m like, Oleg. First time I got. I got limited miles and.
Yeah, on that. Hey, thank you. Hey, man. It’s good on you. It fits great. Dude. Yeah. I need a shirt, dude. If you got it, you can. I don’t have any extra shirts. I’m sorry. Can I wear your shirt? Sure. Just kidding. That was very squeezy. That was fun. Yeah, it was tight, but it was fun. It’s just a little disconcerting when you have no clue what you’re coming up to, that’s all. So after making our way through the maze of sand dunes where you had sand over the top of your truck and you couldn’t see, we transitioned over to the exact same type of thing.
Long, deep valleys, canyon walls. Except now the sand was replaced with paint. Scratching, headlight, breaking rocks all the way around us. And we were on our way to the Gatekeeper, and one of the guys in our tribe with his 6 inch lifted, 37 inch tired 80 series was going to attempt the Gatekeeper. But we weren’t going to do just that. Oleg and Felix set up two grills and started cooking up phenomenal hamburgers for anybody that was interested. So it was a really good time. Plus. Well, you’ll see. This is where the carnage begins. Yes. Oleg. Yeah.
Is this where you came exactly? See the cave right there? That’s obstacle. Yeah. Sorry. That always washed you. I was expecting it. I kind of was too. Honest. You Go too fast. Well, well, you. When you. When you’ve decided your truck is worth 190, 000 less than it was last year, I don’t trust you anymore. I stopped giving a. I still gotta try. I still need mine. Yeah, you see that one? It looks like it was made with a bucket, but it goes all the way back. And it’s full of human horrible sa. I don’t whip for it.
You’re bumpering. There you go. That’s the line right there. Careful, careful. A little bit more. There’s a trail right here. We’re going to go up there. But he already took off. There you go. Got it. Oh, you like right there. Oleg, his bumper is hooked in that rock right there. Your bumper’s what? His bumper’s hooked on the rock. Your bumper’s on a rock in the back. I can’t see the back. I got like 20 people here. Nobody say I’m down in a hole. So out of our entire crew, Daniel was the only one that was willing to actually try the gatekeeper.
His truck is on a 6 inch lift, 37 inch tires, and he beat the out of the sheet metal on the driver’s side. But he didn’t care. That was. That was the point. That’s what the truck’s built for. Unfortunately, he broke his driver’s side front burfield axle. And while he was backing down, an off road club called the 6040 Off Road Club rolled in with some seriously built jeeps and Toyotas and they were going to take a try at this. And these trucks are custom built specifically to do this exact obstacle straight up. Daniel drove this thing from his house all the way in from Southern California and then drove it all the way back home to Southern California.
These boys brought their rigs on a trailer, so there’s a big difference, and you’ll see that very, very shortly. But Daniel definitely was the showstopper on this one. He almost had. So with the off roading festivities done, Felix and Oleg broke out the grills and started making world class hamburgers in the middle of the desert. And I’m talking for 30 people. I went over and checked on Daniel and I let him borrow my safe, Jack and a couple of other things while he tried to remove all the shrapnel out of his front axle because his driver’s side burfield completely blew up.
It happens. Front locker is on, your tires are going where they want. It happens. But he worked on it all night and into the next day. But while he was working on it the boys from 6040 rolled up in their built specifically for this obstacle trucks and it got a little hectic. It was crazy. So here it is, 6040 offroad. So hey, you want us to move the 4Runner? You want me to move that? It was at this moment that he knew he up. Oh, oh, oh. You boys need a winch? You good? Yeah, I don’t want them.
I got two cameras going. That was perfect. Olig just described this. Be careful. So that basically wrapped up our night. The boys were all going to be breaking out the Modelos and whatever else they were drinking and I went to my own secluded camping spot only to return the next day. Unfortunately, the boys with the tipped over Toyota spent hours and hours trying to extricate the thing because it was in a bad, bad spot. I mean, this is late. I got night vision on them right now and it’s almost impossible to see. But this was crazy.
My buddy Oleg, the owner of Sandy Cats and Kinetic ropes, was actually warning me about this. And as soon as somebody else tried the trailer, it happened right in front of us. So everybody took it in. Good fun. That’s what these trucks are built for. But this was bad. Tomorrow for me got even worse. So here we go. One day later. First thing in the morning is breakfast. Champions, baby. Everybody’s still got two. Yep, there you go. There you go. First thing in the morning. Okay. Welcome to day two. Here we go. We lost the GX 460.
Felix had to go do something else and the Tacoma also took off. So it’s three, four runners and I believe 580 series. And Daniel, the one that tried to do gatekeeper last night, is still going with us because we took out his front axle, stuffed up the axle tube and he’s just going to run it in two wheel drive and he does. So I was warned there’s lots of damage to be had on these trails. And that stuck in my head. But I’m down to clown. Here we go. So we’re currently heading towards an obstacle known as the wall.
It’s super tight and it does damage. And I gotta tell you, to be honest, I almost didn’t show up because I didn’t want to do this trail. But then I thought to myself, this is what you built the truck for. It is what it is. So with damage in mind, we made the long, arduous trek to the wall. And it looked like so this trail right here was bringing us to the wall. And this trail was hardcore as it was. But after the wall, according To Oleg, everything else was smooth sailing. But then I would find out that Oleg’s idea of smooth sailing and a regular person’s idea of smooth sailing are two drastically different things.
You’ll see what I’m talking about rather shortly. Oh, what? What is this? Chef Eller. Yeah, so it says that 64%. Pretty good. All right. Forgot. I’m charging right now, but I forgot. All right. I got 18 cameras and no batteries now. Yeah. All right, so here it is. This is the wall. Oleg has been warning me about this for two days, and believe me, that is stuck in my head. And everybody did the wall. I did the wall last. So let’s watch how everybody else negotiated this. You’re good? Yeah. Do you agree? I’m leaning on you, brother.
I do. I rarely do the west coast. I’m serious. Big difference. Say again? I don’t either. Look at the flex in that thing. And that’s where you stand. Nope, you’re not good. Go this way. There you go. Now slow, slow, slow, slow. Now hard this apart. There you go. I mean, that was almost a lie. So next up for the wall is Oleg, and he’s driving a literal carbon copy of my truck. Same size, same setup. Same, same, same. So if he can make it. Surely I can make it, is what I’m thinking. Yeah, I can’t really see it then a whole lot.
That’s a little better right there, huh? Yeah. Maybe you can get it from down there. Yeah. Good. M Still going up. Yep. Looking good. Yep. You three wheeling a bit straight? Yep. Passenger did all right. Yep. Straight. Yep. Keep coming. You don’t have much of a drop right here. Hold that. You can. You can climb up on that. I want to climb black. All right. No, I think you can climb up on this wall right here. Yeah. Hey, slow, though. So next up is Chef, and chef has an 80 series, and he really loves his truck and does not want to damage it.
And I believe he’s never done this trail like I’ve never done it, and he’s just as nervous as I am. But he’s got a solid front axle. Yeah. Go straight. Steve, you’re going. Passenger straight off on. Keep going slowly down. Yeah, Go a little bit. Driver. Okay, if you back him up. Back it. All right, so go a little bit. Drive that rear. Climbs are good. There you go. Yeah, there you go. No damage. Want to get out and kick the wall. So after Chef in the third gen and Olig and Justin all ace the wall, the last one beside me was Daniel.
Now, remember, Daniel is Only in two wheel drive. And try as he might, he couldn’t climb in there, so we ended up having to winch him in. But come on, man. Two wheel drive, he still tried it. This kid’s an animal. So now there’s only one rig left to do the trail, and that would be me. So I roll in there and I’m stressed. I’m already stressed because I’ve heard the word damage so many times. But everybody else made it. What could possibly go wrong? I’m gonna have him do the spotter because he did me. I don’t know where I was.
I’m gonna watch him, though. Low driver, big. All right, keep coming. Needs to go. Needs to get on that rock right there. He looks good right now. Slow so you don’t kick the rock out. Okay. Passenger this much? Yeah. The rear was good. Now, this is not the face you want to see the guy spotting you make, but it was just my driver’s mirror. It went back together. Not the biggest deal. I’ve lost. I don’t know how many Toyota driver side mirrors over the years, but at this point, we swapped up spotters. That’s what you did.
Yeah. Yeah, I think it’s good right there. Yeah, that line looks good. I had you hug that wall until you got to. So because I very rarely four wheel in these particular conditions, my tire pressure was a bit too high and nobody. I didn’t ask anybody until it was too late. So my tires being slightly over inflated compared to everybody else’s, instead of grabbing, they would spin. So that sucked. But it was what it was. What are you gonna do? You live and learn, right? Get out, get out. Go behind me. So that was one of the most stressful trails ever.
And all the crunching noise was simply my rear view mirror, which we were able to put back together. But sitting there while they’re stacking rocks with my foot on the gas and the brake the entire time was incredibly stressful because after I hit the mirror, I was. I already rolled down my back window. I was positive I was going to drag the entire driver’s side across those rocks, but I didn’t. So not only that, not that big of a deal, but no lucky green check mark for me. So with the wall out of the way, we only had two more obstacles and the next obstacle we knew was going to be difficult and we would probably have to winch up it.
But the last obstacle was supposed to be a walk in the park. So let’s get to those right now. So the next happy little Adventure we had to deal with was a thing called the waterfall. Now, the waterfall is a steep, steep, steep climb where you have to turn and then turn again or you’ll hit the rocks. Shocking. Correct. This is what it looks like spotting me, that’s all. How did that look? Now, even though the trucks could easily make this climb, you see the rocks right there? There’s a great chance you’re going to bounce off one side or the other.
So winching up just made the most sense. And I mean, Sandy Cats does make off roading recovery equipment for a living. So if he says to do it, I did it. And with a little help from a friend, he made it. So you got a hero. So there’s a sharp edge. Oh, no. I should be fine. Yeah, it battled, I think. Question. All right. Neutral and hold brakes, right? Yeah. Justin, can the side by side get it get by you guys? If we let him go? All right. Sorry, brother. Five grand goes up and 100 grand sits behind.
Well, yeah, five grand went up because five grand was a smaller lighter empty truck. Both the hundred thousand dollar trucks were totally 100 loaded down and we didn’t want to smoke them. Just because you’re winching doesn’t mean you can’t make it. It’s called not destroying your vehicle. So that’s what we chose to do. So we don’t have any footage of Mikey B’s third gen 4Runner bouncing right up there. But Mikey does not give an F at all. Next on deck is chef in his 80 series. Straight out, straight out, straight out. Straight, straight. All right, Chef, turn your front locker off real quick and then turn driver and back up.
Driver hard. Driver, right there. Stop. Now make him go straight. Great. More straight. Go forward and turn it to passenger. Slowly, slowly. Do I want there front locker on? Yep, you’re good. Hold that. Turn the front locker on. Alex, two foot, two feet? Yep, two feet. Driving? Yeah. Hell yeah. So with his solid front axle and his own personal spotter that came with him, Chef basically walked right up it, which was awesome. So now I’m on deck and I’m basically going to take the same route as Sandy cats because that’s what he told me to do.
This is his neck of the woods, so I trust it. Walmart front block. Lock it. Lock the front. Go this way, this way. Trying to climb that. Yep, yep, Right there. There you go. There you go, there you go, there you go. Okay, you want a wedge? Yeah. That’s your winch spot right there. You’re gonna do the same thing I Think. Yeah. You got a soft cycle, too. So this is what I’m seeing right now from the driver’s seat. The sky, I can’t see anything. The 3rd gen 4Runner made it, but he was bouncing all over the place.
So I’m just gonna winch it. This ain’t my thing. It’s early. Here we go. A little bit of gas, a little bit. Very slow, very slow. Like that. Oh, yeah, baby. Slow. Steady now with the three hard parts. The wall, the waterfall, and the trail in out of the way. According to Oleg, everything else is just gravy. Everything else is going to be easy. No problemo. Anybody can do it. You could do it in a Subaru. Well, I beg to differ, because as soon as I heard the name Pucker Pass, I’ve heard that name before, and I thought to myself, what could possibly go wrong? But he said, there’s a go around and that’s what we’ll do.
So that’s what we did. It’s it. Okay, Rich, smile for the camera. Let me not roll it, man. Let me. All right, you got it. If you ever decide to do these particular trails out in the Calico backcountry, I suggest you go with somebody else. Or at the very least, bring a Starlink with you. The Starlink mini is a pretty amazing thing because you have no cell phone in here, and everything in here can take you out. You know what I’m saying? This is seriously hard course stuff, but the trucks did it, no problem. It was just.
It was a matter of trying to keep cosmetic damage, you know, dollar signs to an absolute minimum, if humanly possible. And everybody did it except for me. But hey, I’m from Boston. What are you going to do? At any rate, let’s get to Pucker Pass, shall we? Let’s get off this NASA Mars moon set here. So we’re heading to Pucker Pass and we’re going to take the go around. Like Oleg explained. He said the trail was just too narrow for anybody’s truck to fit. But that didn’t stop Mikey b. And his 3rd gen 4 runner. This kid knows no limits and does not give one single F.
He’ll do it. As you saw earlier, full sin, brother, this line’s actually not that bad. Ready? Yeah. Just watch me. Or you gonna do it yourself? Okay, you got to go up from there. You got to be closer to the wall. Way closer. There you go. Now straight. Yeah. Not bad at all, huh? Go, go. That’s the line right there. Slow. There you go. Whoa. Oh, stupid. Two inches Too far that way. That’s what it was. Stupid close. Right there. Oh, my God. Mikey B. Imagine that’s right. Hell yeah. Eight inches wider. That’s impossible. Dude. Brother man.
You back, Wheel man. Oh, scary. Oh, yeah. Good though. So Mikey made it down Pucker Pass, but Justin, the lead truck that you haven’t seen much of because he’s been 10 trucks in front of me, he took the easy way around and almost flipped his truck over. Yeah, that’s a thing. So here’s the breakdown. Since we don’t have very good footage of Justin’s 80 series on 37 inch tires, you have to come up this really, really steep road that’s made out of scree. If you’ve never climbed the mountains, you don’t know what scree is. But every time you put your foot down, the rocks go out from under you like sands in an hourglass.
And when you get to the top, there’s a big rock right where his rear tire is that you have to go over. And then once you get over that, there’s no road. So the truck starts rolling down, down Pucker Pass. It was absolutely insane. And the amount of time, energy and effort it took to get over this not an obstacle was crazy because Justin’s lucky that he didn’t go over right away. He was definitely in what’s called 80 series 3 wheel motion big time. But here’s what it looked like for the rest of us. Remember Daniel, the guy that ran Gatekeeper? Well, he’s only got two wheel drive and this is how it worked out for him.
You got it. Let’s go. So, yeah, the first truck that went up this almost tipped over when it got to the top. The second truck that went up this couldn’t do it because he only had rear wheel drive. We ended up having to do a complicated winch to get him up and around the corner. Because there’s a corner up there, which is just phenomenal. At any rate, we got Daniel up and all as well. And then it was my turn. So there was the second hit. You heard my spot. I say you’re on the line. So I follow the line and smash my headlight right into that rock right there.
Because when you’re driving, you can’t see, but it is what it is. What are you gonna do? So now, like everybody else, to get around this corner without rolling your truck, you’ve got a winch around the corner while people stack rocks under your tires. Literally. This was the easy part, or so they said. Keep going, keep watching. Winch Passenger. Passenger winch at the same time. Passenger. Stop, stop. Stop Winching. Let’s reset. Going reset. Everything right there. We’re gonna go slow. Okay, Shot’s gonna pull. Stop. Let’s reset for a second. It looks good on. He has no turning radius.
This down and then turn. Go forward six inches. Go forward six inches left. Check. Pull. Stop. Stop. Oh, too fast. Get out of the done. So I made it through with simply a broken headlight, but my headlights have these big bubbles, and my actual headlights are underneath. So it’s just a cosmetic thing. It is what it is. What are you gonna do? But all of us had to do this to get through this particular tip over thing, because if you around, you would indeed find out rather quickly. So fortunately, nobody got hurt. The only damage was scratches and bumps.
No big deal. But this was the most insane trail that I’ve ever done because of the circumstances. You’re doing these insane obstacles, and you’ve got. You’re surrounded by walls of really hard glass. Breaking, mirror breaking, paint scraping rocks, and that’s what made it more. That was the. Probably the best day of my life recently, Without a doubt. And it was a great group of guys. None of the trucks broke down except for the broken axle. But, I mean, the kid was doing a. I mean, he made that. He was doing an obstacle that made the Rubicon look like your driveway.
You know what I’m saying? So, like I said, I’m going to leave links to everybody’s Instagram and everything else below. After we finally finished this up with all the trucks, Oleg brought us over to this underground cavern system, which was pretty insane. Even though this video is long, I’m still going to include it. So here it is. Justin, will you. Will you carry me? Yes. Thanks. I can’t believe you let me smash my light like that. You. You were so happy I saw you. You were like, that’s awesome. We’re gonna go that way. All right. Sorry, brother.
Hey, there’s a dude over here. This is sick, dude. This is definitely sick. I mean, you got levels. You got a bedroom for the kids. I’m done. We’re coming back here. At least Me, Felix. I’ll come back here. Oh, I’m coming back here. Last night. How far does this go? It goes, dude. Yep. Oh, no, it doesn’t. My bad. Oh, we’re going to go in one way. Oh, so all these guys. Wow. So if I had a YouTube channel like. Like Olig, I would videotape these and post them. Don’t tell them where it Is. No, don’t say.
Yeah, I’m recording. Don’t say. This is a lovely part of Texas. I didn’t know this even existed down here at the Sonoran border. Could be. Look at that, dude. Wow. That is sick, man. No lights. Whoa. That’s lovely. Oh. Hey. Who did that? That’s not cool, bro. Dude, look at that, man. I’ve been out here 15 times, and I never found this. Have you been out here before? Oh, yeah, a bunch of times. Bunch of times. No. Are you really? Because around ain’t funny, dude. You surprise somebody and they bash their head. I’m just gonna let out a really might p.
Stream squeeze. That’s kind of it. Unless you want to start climbing. I don’t want to climb. Okay. So who hangs out down here? I don’t know, but let’s get a hammer and hit this one. Support. I don’t know. What is this? I understand who’s causing that. There’s a lot of rat poop and stuff, too. That’s not rat poop. That’s feathers. See? Oh, somebody ate it already. Or. That’s pretty fun. It’s got to be a burrowing owl. It’s a beautiful feather. It’s cool, man. That’s. It’s got to be a burrowing owl. I would imagine. I’m into that.
Haven’t eaten one thing today. What kind of feathers are those? Down in a hole, and I don’t know if I can be seen. I’ve eaten the sun, so my tongue has been burned by the tea. I have been guilty of kicking myself in the tea. Just keep going. Making sweet, sweet love to the cave workers. Who knows? To be honest, you know what I mean? But that is crazy. It’s like, where’d you. It’s looking for you. Literally. It’s looking back and forth. Right here. Come on. Obstacle. You don’t want to. Too much overhead. Back up this way.
All right, guys, watch out for those drones. Do me a favor. It took me three days to edit this because it was a lot of trucks, a lot of activities, a lot of guys. I wanted to give everybody their due. Their links will be in the description box below. Hit that, like, share and subscribe. And I’m out.
