Chicago. Come on back to the front of the congregation. A young man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Family members tell us this 20 year old is the one shot and killed after he was caught in a street takeover on the southwest side over the weekend. New at 10 CBS whose Charlie tomorrow spoke with his loved ones about what happened and how he’s being remembered Charlie. John Erica family says the 20 year old got trapped in a chaotic circle of cars and people unable to escape before he was shot and killed. In a legal street takeover took a tragic turn early Sunday morning in Gage Park.

People started you know jumping on his car. I think in one of the videos it shows someone on top of his hood. Police say Guillermo Caballero was driving this black sedan trying to get through the crowd. Marie Descartes shot. Good and another blocking the car. Several shots were fired through the windshield. He was 20 years old. I’m angry, sad. They said that he took two gunshot wounds to the face, one in the chest and one in the arm. younger sister, Straya Caballero says her brother was at a friend’s house and on his way home when he came across the takeover described as kind, funny.

And the life of the party. We love to sing when we had our little gatherings here. He’s going to grab the mic. He went all the go, the mic. Back at the intersection that burned rubber, a reminder of the deadly recklessness. It was definitely a wrong place on time. Caballero’s family not only calling for accountability but also an end to legal car meetups. We’re trying to you know bring more awareness to street takeovers. You think more should be done to shut these down? I definitely think more should be done to stop this. And so far no arrests have been made.

Chicago police asking for help. They’re looking for any additional pictures or video that may help them identify the shooters and the family has set up a fundraiser to help them with funeral costs. We are live in. Imagine trying to get home from your friend’s house. You turned down the wrong street and then next thing you know, you want an illegal street takeover where there’s a stolen car, chaos, neighbors being terrorized, people running around with guns and then you take two bullets to the face because you’re trying to get a body there. It’s always the innocent people that get killed.

You know that right? It’s never the criminals. It’s never the people that is perpetuating the violence. It’s never the ones that’s doing the break-ins all of that. Worst case scenario a lot of times, those guys wind up getting caught later on by continuing to perpetuate crime. But it’s always them that live to see another day and they may do three hot’s in the cot and they go die of old age at 90 years old in prison once they do 10 other crimes that’s perpetuated against the community. It’s never the people that just, you know, you can’t just get home.

It’s always the criminals that survive. So yeah, man, the street takeovers that’s happening everywhere including Chicago and Oakland and, you know, the Bay Area and San Francisco and all of that stuff. And that’s a very unfortunate story. In addition to that, a violent armed robbery in Chicago just the other night was caught on camera. Take a look. That’s right. And it’s the aggressiveness of these armed robberies that the employees tell me shocked them the most. We know of at least three shops across the city that were robbed last night. And we have to warn you about the surveillance video you’re about to see from one of those incidents, it’s quite violent.

The same liquor store has been robbed at least four times this year in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. Surveillance video caught one of these armed robberies just before 10 p.m. last night at Buchanan’s liquor on 47th Street. We’ve blurred the victim’s faces as you see three masked men charged into the store. The first thing he did when he walked into the store is he hit him with the hammer. He pissed the whipped him as soon as he got into the store and the dude just fell over. Literally the first thing they didn’t go in and say, hey, let me get your wallet or this is a robbery or whatever.

Soon as my man walked into the store and this is why y’all got to be careful because they tell us not to stereotype. They tell us not to pay attention to our surroundings. They tell us diversity, equity and inclusion. They tell us that everybody is safe. It don’t matter what you look like. Hey, even if they got a push I see mask on in the hood all. Ah, you can’t do that because that’s racism. You can’t do that because that’s racism. You can forget it, bro. You got a store. You got, hey, we don’t like the fact that we got a ball of this plexiglass and, you know, why y’all always putting up plexiglass in the hood? Why y’all always stereotyping us? The first thing that my man did when he walked into the store, look at him.

So it’s going to be right there on the left. They just walking in and then my man in the gray shirt, the first thing my man going to do, he went to the store and the first thing he did was hit him in the head with the gun and knocked him down. Three masked men charged into the store. The robbers immediately hit two of the customers with their guns. Pistol whip, both of them. And first he hit him in the head with the gun and they knocked out, they laid on the floor and then they started pointing the pistol in their face.

Now, these are monsters, bro. These are not large gatherings. These are not troubled youth. This is not a man. This is not a mental health issue. These are monsters. These are dudes that are conditioned to kill, conditioned to go in, hit you in the head with the butt of the gun. Possibly will shoot you just to make sure there ain’t no witnesses. They’ve been conditioned with the music, they’ve been conditioned with the culture, they see it every day, they’re ready for war. And you are the victim. The more vulnerable you are, the more likely you are to be to suffer of what’s going on in these communities.

Seeing them to the ground. The EMS responding over to view cannons that a male in the store was hit in the head and he’s bleeding. The video then shows the three suspects quickly work their way around the store, demanding the clerks to hand over the cash from the new downer. The offenders spend several minutes inside while the two injured customers remain on the ground. The store clerk was too shaken to talk to us on camera about the incident but says it’s frustrating with how often this keeps happening. What’s that address again? I think that’s the one that’s been hit a few times.

Yeah, it’s two cannons again. Police also responded to another incident just after 10 p.m. in Pilsen on 18th Street. Three men stormed into ultra bowl lickers while customers were still inside and police say they be an employee and stole money from multiple customers before driving off in a silver sedan. So what was taken was about $10,000 in cash and then also four wallets were taken with a total of $800. Then just about 15 minutes later, another business. Your Damon and Armitage was robbed by three armed men. Police say money was stolen from the cash register and the suspects got away in a light colored sedan but no one was hurt.

Of course, you know, police ain’t ever going to find them. Ain’t no nothing. Nobody know nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nobody knows anything. They just, they running around. They hitting multiple different stores. I don’t know if y’all, if y’all old enough to have watched juice, if y’all ever watched juice. Juice with Tupac and Omar Epps and Steel and all of them Rodamiz and all of that stuff. That’s literally what you see here is that the crime starts versus nervousness. First they’re going to do it one time. Then they get away with it and then they get more brazen and they get more aggressive with it and it just continues to progress.

So that’s what’s happening over in that hood. And then last but not least, New York is saying that they’re cracking down on retail theft. Major cities across the U.S. have been battling an expensive problem for the last several years, organized retail theft. In 2022 alone, the losses added up to more than $100 billion. Well now New York City is cracking down on these operations that buys stolen goods in bulk and then resell it for a huge profit. Here’s CBS’s Lily on Luciano. It’s called Fencing. The people behind Fencing Operations often use individual shop lifters to steal goods from your local Dwayne Reid, your Bodega, your convenience store.

From there the goods are brought to the Fencers who boost their bottom line by reselling them. A similar operation shutdown in Los Angeles. Police found hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen items believed to be from Target, CBS and Walmart. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Houston and New York are the most impacted by organized retail crime. Recently, Nora spoke with the CEO of CBS Health Karen Lynch about the problem. I remember back in the day the really expensive stuff would be under lock and key. I get that. But now it’s like shampoo and toothpaste. Why? Because they’re coming in and they’re just ripping through the entire counter.

And so we’re trying to keep things safe. The New York DA said today that more than $200,000 from that million dollar bus were goods that were stolen from Macy’s alone. And actually say that this type of crime doesn’t only impact what consumers could end up paying, but also jobs because many of these retailers end up shutting down stores. So New York City is getting tougher on crime. Chicago, they still haven’t shoot out, so nothing has changed. I’m not sure if New York City is getting tougher on crime. I just think that if somebody snitched, somebody got caught, somebody snitched and then they busted the operation.

And like somebody said inside of the chat, fencing is as old as it’s time. But this shouldn’t be happening in the United States of America and the modern world. Like we’ve progressed to the point where we got so much technology, we got AI. I mean, look, I looked at a piece of software today where I was talking to my editor, right? And, you know, person that be editing a lot of my interviews and stuff like that. And I sent them a clip and the AI basically breaks down the camera angles to where you don’t have to go through and be able to switch between the camera angles while the different conversations is happening.

It does it automatically. And my editor was looking at me like, oh, am I going to be out of a job? We’re just going to make your job easier. And so this will allow for us to be able to ramp up production in other spaces and I’ll be able to utilize you in other spaces. But we got so much technology today and we can’t stop retail theft. We still in 2024 as a recording it is, as a live streaming it is, we can’t stop retail theft in 2024. We can do anything. I mean, there’s robots that’s able to identify if you say, hey, give me something to eat and they can differentiate between what the different foods are, but we can’t stop retail theft.
